Stargate SG-1 Reopens the Portal: 214 Episodes Return to Netflix After 3-Year Absence

In a surprising licensing twist, Netflix has struck a deal with Amazon’s MGM to bring back the legendary sci-fi series. All 10 seasons of Stargate SG-1 are returning just in time for your Valentine’s Day binge marathon.

The Stargate Opens Again: Mark Your Calendar

After disappearing from Netflix in December 2022 when Amazon consolidated MGM content for Prime Video, Stargate SG-1 is making its triumphant return. The entire 10-season run—all 214 episodes—hits Netflix on February 15, 2026 in select regions.

Why This Return Matters

For sci-fi fans, Stargate SG-1 isn’t just another show—it’s a cornerstone of the genre. Running from 1997 to 2007, the series expanded the universe established by Roland Emmerich’s 1994 film, transforming a single movie concept into one of the longest-running sci-fi franchises in television history.

The show follows Colonel Jack O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson), Dr. Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks), Major Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping), and the Jaffa warrior Teal’c (Christopher Judge) as they explore galaxies through an ancient alien portal—the Stargate.

According to What’s on Netflix, this marks part of a larger licensing deal between Netflix and Amazon’s MGM Television, which has already brought Hunters (starring Al Pacino) and Fargo to the streaming platform.

The Amazon Acquisition Impact

When Amazon acquired MGM in 2022, many assumed the studio’s catalog would remain locked exclusively on Prime Video. However, this new Netflix deal proves Amazon is willing to license MGM content to competitors for the right price—good news for subscribers who prefer Netflix’s interface.

Currently, only Stargate SG-1 is confirmed for the return. The spin-offs Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe remain Prime Video exclusives for now. However, if SG-1 performs well in viewership metrics, don’t be surprised to see the Pegasus Galaxy expedition follow suit later in 2026.

What About Canada and Other Regions?

Interestingly, Canada is notably absent from the initial region list. According to Portal Netflix, the series will be available in:

• United States ✓
• United Kingdom ✓
• Latin America ✓
• Canada ✗ (not confirmed)

More international territories may be announced as the February release date approaches.

The MGM-Netflix Renaissance

This deal is part of Netflix’s renewed relationship with MGM content. Recent additions include:

• James Bond film collection
• Hunters (Prime Video series)
• Fargo (select regions)
• Legally Blonde
• Licorice Pizza (coming January 2026)

The Man in the High Castle is also reportedly heading to Netflix, though no release date has been confirmed.

Perfect Timing for New Fans

With a new Stargate reboot in development at Prime Video (led by showrunner Martin Gero, as reported by Variety), Netflix’s timing couldn’t be better. New viewers can experience the original series that launched the franchise before the reboot arrives.

For longtime fans, this means revisiting classic episodes like “Window of Opportunity,” “Heroes,” and the epic series finale that brought 10 years of adventures to a close.

What Makes SG-1 Worth Binging?

Stargate SG-1 perfected the episodic sci-fi format while building compelling mythology across 10 seasons. The show balances:

• Monster-of-the-week adventures perfect for casual viewing
• Deep mythology involving the Goa’uld, Asgard, and Ancients
• Character development that spans years
• Humor that never undermines the stakes
• Military tactics grounded in reality

At 214 episodes, it’s a massive commitment—but one that sci-fi enthusiasts consistently call worthwhile.
