Starfield tops the Games chart in September 2023

According to data from the September 2023 industry report from Circana (formerly NPD), Starfield was the most popular game in the US for the month. The PC version, which was made available on September 6 for PC and Xbox Series X/S, was its main sales platform. Starfield has now become the eighth most popular game of 2023 so far since its debut.

Sales of video game content rose 13% year over year (yoy) in September 2023 to $3.8 billion, with digital premium download expenditure on console and PC accounting for the majority of the increases. Spending on subscriptions decreased 2% during the month.

Spending on hardware decreased by 8% year over year to $451 million, with Xbox Series consoles experiencing a single-digit gain offset by falls for PlayStation 5 and Switch. In terms of both unit and dollar sales, the PlayStation 5 was once again the best-selling platform for September 2023, with Xbox Series consoles coming in second. In terms of both unit and dollar sales, the PlayStation 5 is still the platform that people are buying the most.

To reach $197 million, accessory spending climbed 11% year over year, with controller spending rising by 15%. The best-selling accessory of the month was the PS5 Dual Sense Wireless Controller – Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Limited Edition. Spending on Racing Controller increased by 18%. Consumer expenditure on video game content, hardware, and accessories increased overall by 10% year over year in September 2023 to $4.5 billion, offsetting an 8% fall in hardware sales.
