Spooky in Love : From Clean-Cut to Cold-Blooded: Ong Seong Wu’s Big Villain Debut

Ong Seong Wu is trading his boy-next-door charm for something far darker. In his upcoming drama “Spooky in Love,” the idol-actor takes on his first-ever villain role — and he’s already opening up about what drew him to it.

Spooky in Love: Overview

What’s the Story?

“Spooky in Love” follows Cheon Yeo Ri (Park Eun Bin), a hotel heiress who can see ghosts, and Ma Gang Wook (Yang Se Jong), a prosecutor who’s terrified of them. Their chaotic, mismatched partnership drives the show’s central mystery-solving dynamic as they navigate cases involving the supernatural.

Why Ong Seong Wu Took the Role

Ong Seong Wu shared that the original film’s popularity made the remake instantly appealing, and that playing Kang Min Hwan — a character created entirely for this adaptation — gave him a chance to build fresh tension into a story audiences already love. He described Min Hwan as someone who masks deep ambition and insecurity behind a gentle exterior, using emotional manipulation to get what he wants.

A Deliberate Image Shift

Known for a clean-cut, youthful screen presence, Ong Seong Wu said he wanted this role to reveal a colder, unfamiliar side of himself, hoping viewers walk away surprised by the shift. Rather than playing the villain as purely menacing, he focused on grounding Min Hwan’s actions in clear motivations — giving the character’s ambition an internal logic rather than cartoonish evil.

What to Watch For

According to Ong Seong Wu, the real hook of the series lies in how Yeo Ri and Gang Wook’s unlikely partnership evolves as they work through increasingly strange cases together — a dynamic rooted in the classic mismatched-duo structure that’s powered countless entries in the broader occult detective genre.
