The sequel to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man Beyond the Spider-Verse, is set to enter theatres in March 2024. However, one animator claims that it is impossible. Despite its success, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has been dogged by rumors of production issues.
Amy Pascal, the producer, has rejected accusations of a toxic work environment amidst reports of a high turnover of animators, excessive working hours, and sudden last-minute changes. Pascal claims that the animators were not adequately prepared to handle the demands of a film with such a significant budget.
Despite the rumours, Sony has stated that Spider-Man Beyond the Spider-Verse will be released in theatres in 2024. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse left a lot of things unresolved, so a rapid release date for the sequel thrills fans.
According to an anonymous animator, it seems unlikely that Spider-Man Beyond the Spider-Verse will be released in 2024. Contrary to fans’ belief that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Beyond the Spider-Verse were developed at the same time, it appears that this is not the case. According to the unidentified animator, work on the third film has only recently commenced. Given that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse took four years to complete, the chance of an early 2024 release appears remote.
In order to ensure the timely release of Spider-Man Beyond the Spider-Verse, Sony needs to learn from the mistakes made during the development of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. There seemed to be a lack of coordination in the production management of the latter, involving directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K.
Throughout the creation process of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the team faced a significant hurdle when unexpected changes had to be made to the animation. These unforeseen adjustments necessitated animators to work long hours, with shifts lasting up to 11 hours per day, seven days a week. This not only resulted in exhaustion for the animators, but it also left them with no spare time to dedicate to Spider-Man Beyond the Spider-Verse.
