The Witcher Season 4
With Liam Hemsworth replacing Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, the fourth season of The Witcher has officially begun production at Netflix. The pictures feature Cavill enjoying himself greatly with his co-stars, which include Joey Batey, who plays Jaskier.
Netflix has confirmed that The Witcher’s fifth and final season will include Geralt’s adventure alongside Ciri (Freya Allan), Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), and Jaskier (Batey).
“It is with great pride that we begin filming our penultimate season of The Witcher with a stellar cast, including some exciting new additions, led by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia,” said showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich.
“We’re overjoyed to be able to conclude Andrzej Sapkowski’s works in a grand and fulfilling way. Watch to find out how the tale concludes—it wouldn’t be our program if we didn’t push our cast of relatives to the furthest.”
The Witcher season 4 is about to go into production, and Netflix has officially announced that Danny Woodburn from Seinfeld, Sharlto Copley from District 9, and James Purefoy from Rome will be joining the popular fantasy series. That’s not all—John Wick legend Laurence Fishburne has been cast as the show’s beloved character Regis.
However, the White Wolf himself will likely undergo the most significant shift going forward. Liam Hemsworth will take Henry Cavill’s position in the series, and there will also be new directors joining The Witcher season 4, many speculated spin-offs, and much more.
Before we get ahead of ourselves, though, we’ve also dissected a comprehensive guide to The Witcher season 4, which includes the cast, hypotheses, anticipated premiere date, and tons of insider knowledge to keep you busy until Geralt makes a reappearance.
Despite a number of setbacks and delays along the way—including some caused by the SAG-AFTRA strike—a new report from Redanian Intelligence indicates that pre-production for season 4 will begin in January 2024 and that filming will soon commence.
It looks like we won’t be able to view the completed season until 2025 at the latest if filming starts in 2024. Witcher fans will have to wait a long time.
Freya Allan reaffirmed this, noting that the Netflix series is “gearing up” for production. Stay tuned. Dijkstra actor Graham McTavish informed GamesRadar+ that the majority of the scripts have been prepared; they haven’t seen them yet. This suggests that production is almost ready to begin when those involved are ready.
“I’ve seen some hazy stuff. They prefer not to give us too much information. I’m not sure why they like to keep things a secret from you, but in all honesty, I enjoy the element of surprise. In season four, I’m excited to pace the hallways once more—perhaps with a different candle and, you know, a slightly different coat. I might consider changing my outfit.”
The Witcher
The majority of the main cast members from The Witcher season 4 will be back, including Ciri (Freya Allan), Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), and Jaskier (Joey Batey).
Additionally, we anticipate seeing more of the following characters: Istredd (Royce Pierreson), Sabrina Glevissig (Therica Wilson-Read), Vilgefortz (Mahesh Jadu), Phillipa (Cassie Clare), Cahir (Eamon Farren), Francesca (Mecia Simson), Triss (Anna Shaffer), and Fringilla (Mimi Ndiweni).
Other additions from season 3 such as Radovid (Hugh Skinner), Milva (Meng’er Zhang), and Emhyr (Bart Edwards), the Nilfgaardian Emperor, are also anticipated to return.
Subsequently, there are The Rats, who made their debut in the third season finale. They consist of the following actors: Ben Radcliffe as Giselher; Mistle (Christelle Elwin); Fabian McCallum as Kayleigh; Iskra (Aggy K. Adams); Reef (Juliette Alexandra); and Asse (Connor Crawford).
How will Liam Hemsworth be recast to play Geralt?
In summary, we currently don’t know. The only thing we do know for sure is Henry Cavill’s farewell performance as Geralt of Rivia has already broadcast, and Liam Hemsworth, who portrayed the character in The Hunger Games, will be playing him when we next see him.
A hypothetical multiverse has been hinted at by one of the show’s producers, sparking some conjecture over how this would occur. “This is a very little thing that I will tease – people who know the books really deeply also know that this is not a typical fantasy book,” the producer said. There are multiple worlds. There are multiple stories taking place in those books and tales.”
“There are no different versions,” Declan de Barra told GamesRadar+ back in late 2022. “They may have changed in terms of their character arc, how long they’ve lived, and what they’re doing on these other worlds, but it’s the same person.” However, this stands in stark contrast to what another producer previously told us about how the show approaches multiverses. It’s not as though Jaskier exists in two versions. It’s clear that there is only one Yennefer and one version of each person.
Not only has Bagiński told other media that he’s seen Hemsworth in the complete Geralt costume, but he looks “awesome” in it as well, indicating that the actor has been rehearsing for the part with makeup trials and the like, but he hasn’t really met most of the cast yet.
In June 2023, Joey Batey, star of Jaskier, stated: “I’ve been in contact with him.” The actors, in an interview with GamesRadar+, said they’ve sent a few emails back and forth, but not much more.
We have been swapping favorite quotes from the novels via emails and other correspondence. He’s putting a lot of effort into the role of Geralt, but I don’t think any of us are qualified to offer advice. Not only has Batey been going to ridiculous training sessions, but he has also been reading a ton of books. Anya Chalotra, who starred in Yennefer, claims that they have communicated “through email.”
The Witcher : Plot
According to Neftlix, the official synopsis for The Witcher season 4 is as follows: “The new season follows Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri as they navigate the war-torn Continent and its many demons apart from each other, following the shocking, Continent-altering events that close out season three.” They have a chance to survive the baptism of fire and reunite with one another if they can accept and guide the groups of outcasts they end up with.”
Other than that, we don’t know any more precise plot points, but it doesn’t mean we don’t know what the fantastical world will hold next.
Since Ciri has now joined the group of young criminals, we know there are a lot of plot details that need to be resolved thanks to the season 3 finale. There have been rumors of a spin-off show starring The Rats, but we expect this to also be featured in the fourth season.
We won’t go into major plot spoilers here, but based on the books’ trajectory, The Witcher season 4 will probably cover the majority of Andrzej Sapkowski’s third novel, Baptism of Fire, which centers on Geralt getting entangled in a new conflict between two warring parties while Ciri finds her place among The Rats.
In an interview with SFX, actress Allan discussed the future of her character and the reasons behind adding more stunts for her. “I wanted it to feel like she started to use that training and put that into real life, although she’s not killing anyone yet, or shouldn’t be,” Allan said. “Now that she’s going by the name Falka too, expect to see a different kind of iteration of her going forward… if we are not seeing her do anything yet.”
While Yen will surely be busy trying to reconstruct the damage done in the wake of the Aretuza carnage and the loss of her mentor Tissaia, Geralt and Yennefer’s duty is rather simpler: they will be searching for Ciri and attempting to shield her from harm.

As previously stated, Henry Cavill, who shocked fans and the entertainment industry by deciding to give up the role of Geralt, will not be making an appearance in The Witcher season 4.
Rather, in what is likely to be his most prominent role since The Hunger Games franchise concluded in 2015, Liam Hemsworth will front the ensemble. Although opinions on the decision are mixed, some may change their minds after witnessing him in action.
“I think they cobbled together a really nice opening which is really true to the books,” he remarked, referring to showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and her crew, which included a few returning talented writers for season 4.
“This is a very little thing that I will tease – people who know the books really deeply also know that this is not a typical fantasy book. It’s not just one world. It’s not just one story happening in those books, in those stories.”
Joey Batey and Anya Chalotra, two other cast members, disclosed to RadioTimes.com that Hemsworth had been “training” in order to get ready for filming.
Chalotra responded, “Yeah, we have, we’ve checked in.”
“Lots of emails! But to be honest, I think he’s just using this time before we shoot to train and to study all the books and throw himself into this,” Jaskier actor Joey Batey continued of his preparation.
“He is giving this part his whole commitment, and that is all that can be asked of him. We’re all rather enthusiastic.”
Star of The Matrix Laurence Fishburne has joined the cast as Regis, a worldly-wise barber-surgeon with a mysterious past who accompanies Geralt on his trip in season four. Regis was first introduced in Andrzej Sapkowski’s novel Baptism of Fire.
“I’m very excited to be joining the cast and look forward to exploring the wondrous world of The Witcher,” Fishburne stated in reference to his new position. Many more well-known faces will be making a comeback, including Joey Batey, who will play Jaskier, and Freya Allan and Anya Chalotra, who will play Princess Ciri and Yennefer of Vengerberg, respectively. After the shocking cliffhanger at the conclusion of the most recent installment, we also anticipate Duny/The White Flame to play a larger part. Some fan favorites, including MyAnna Buring, are unlikely to make a comeback, though, especially in light of Tissaia de Vries’ untimely death in season 3.
Tissaia had grown to be Yennefer and the other sorceresses’ mother figure during the course of the program, but in season three, she had suffered enough heartache and concluded that her only choice was to end her own life. “In the end, she is unable to live with herself since she feels completely accountable for the deaths of so many people.
“I believe that level of suffering is intolerable, and after believing for a long time that she could play a significant role in the kingdoms, Aretuza, and the future of Chaos, she suddenly realizes that she is of no use to any of those parties.
“And for that reason, I believe the end is her only option. It’s not the future with her. So are the others. And it disappears from this amazing gang.” Vizimir (Ed Birch), who was eliminated in the season 3 finale as part of a scheme to usurp his brother Radovid (Hugh Skinner) from the throne, is also not anticipated to make a comeback.
Although we’re not expecting to see these characters again, the events of season 3 proved tragic for Francesca, who lost not only her newborn but also her brother Gage (Kaine Zajaz) and her husband Filavandrel (Tom Canton). Their losses will most likely have a significant influence on Francesca’s story in season 4.
The Witcher season 4 plot
The following book in the series depicts our heroes needing to accept their own groups of misfits in order to find their way back to each other after we last left them broken apart across the Continent.
According to a Netflix summary, “The new season follows Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri as they navigate the war-torn Continent and its many demons apart from each other, following the shocking, Continent-altering events that close out season three.”
“If they can embrace and lead the groups of misfits they find themselves in, they have a chance of surviving the baptism of fire — and finding one another again.” The actress Allan from Ciri also provided a really helpful update, discussing some of what she’s observed in the writing for season 4.
She continued: “I’m honestly just intrigued how they’re going to translate that story from the books because it’s… for Ciri’s journey, it’s a very pivotal moment in her storyline, and takes quite a dark turn.”
A highly anticipated development may also be included in the upcoming season, at least according to star Joey Batey. Referring to a group that Geralt put together to save Ciri, “there’s a thing called the hanza, which I’m looking forward to exploring. It’s a bit of a fan favorite moment, I think,” he said to Metro.
Although Sapkowski’s writings served as the basis for the television series, the author has said that not enough consideration has been given to his ideas.
With a giggle, Sapkowski stated, “The set was tremendous. Tremendous… I gave them some ideas, but they never listened to me.” “It’s normal. ‘Who’s this? It’s a writer. It’s nobody.'”
