Official: Southampton Re-Sign James Ward-Prowse — Former Captain Returns from West Ham United

Three years after leaving St Mary’s, James Ward-Prowse is home. Southampton have re-signed former captain James Ward-Prowse from Championship rivals West Ham United. The homecoming brings one of Southampton’s most beloved players back to the club where he spent the entirety of his senior career before his 2023 departure.

A Homecoming Three Years in the Making

West Ham signed the England international from Southampton in a deal worth around £30m in August 2023 but, three years later, he is set to return to St Mary’s to boost their Championship promotion push.

The Saints will pay a modest fee of less than £1 million for the player whom they sold to West Ham United in 2023, as his tumultuous time with the Hammers comes to an end.

The 31-year-old former England midfielder has penned a two-year contract at St Mary’s in a deal understood to be worth just under £1m.

The Transfer at a Glance

In Ward-Prowse’s Own Words

“The last couple of days have been pretty intense, but I’m delighted to be back, and to be wearing the red and white again is truly special. It was an incredible journey up until the point that I left, but home is a special place and I always had it in the back of my mind that it was somewhere that I wanted to be.”

Why the West Ham Spell Failed

James Ward-Prowse never managed to replicate his performances for Southampton, where he was a main man in the team. The midfielder was revered for his set-piece abilities, and to an extent he did replicate that at the London Stadium, but his £30 million move in 2023 is now widely seen as a failure of sorts.

Things had not gotten any better for the 31-year-old since Nuno Espirito Santo joined, as he failed to get a look-in under his former Nottingham Forest boss.

Ward-Prowse left Saints in 2023 to join the Hammers, where he went on to make 75 appearances. During that time he also had loan spells at Nottingham Forest and most recently Burnley, where he played 14 times last season.

A Saint Through and Through — His First Spell

He started his career at Southampton aged eight and came through the academy before making 410 first-team appearances.

Ward-Prowse has made 422 Premier League appearances and has 11 caps for England in his career.

Ward-Prowse impressed while with Southampton in the past, earning several England call-ups for his performances on the south coast.

Career Path

What Ward-Prowse Brings Back to Southampton

At 31 years of age, it remains to be seen whether Ward-Prowse can bring the goal threat and athleticism that Charles did in a Saints shirt, because on the face of it, he seems to be more of a similar profile to both Downes and Bragg.

Last season, Southampton’s midfield was one of their strengths, with Caspar Jander, Flynn Downes, Shea Charles and Cam Bragg all impressing, especially during their long unbeaten run in 2026, but Charles’ summer move to Fulham has left a void to fill.

A Club Known for Welcoming Back Its Own

Ward-Prowse is set to join a number of former players who have returned to St Mary’s in recent seasons, including Theo Walcott and Oriol Romeu.
