Sony planning PSVR's successor for the next holiday season

A new report came out today that suggests Sony will be coming out with its next-gen PlayStation VR headset. Bloomberg‘s sources say Sony is aiming to release the successor in the holiday period next year, and that the headset will feature OLED panels from Samsung Display.

Sony has already begun to talk up the PS5 headset’s potential, so it does not seem rather far-fetched to expect a release in that time frame. We first heard of the PlayStation VR’s successor in February along with a few details, Sony followed it up by showing some of their new controllers in March.

Sony or any tipster has not yet revealed the actual headset, but if we were to believe the report from UploadVR last month, it will have a total resolution of 4000 x 2040 and make use of eye-tracking to enable foveated rendering, which will ease the processing load by using resolution imagery in the user’s peripheral vision.

The next-gen PSVR is also said to use inside-out tracking and include haptic feedback in the headset as well as the controllers.

Blomberg’s report focuses more broadly on Japan Display Inc, an LCD specialist that has witnessed smartphone display sales slump due to the market’s transition towards OLED but now considers VR headsets as the next big thing.

OLED might have been the initial standard for VR, in recent times, manufacturers such as Facebook and HTC have been moving towards LCD panels because they’re more practical at higher resolutions despite having lower contrast. But as of now, Sony seems to be sticking with OLED for the time being for the next PSVR.
