Sony Big News: Lays Off 8% Of PlayStation Staff
The news that you heard above is right, not a rumour or leak and confirmed by Sony itself. Recently, Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that there is a significant reduction in the workforce of the PlayStation Studios.
In the staff reduction, something around 8% of the workforce, or almost 900 people are expected to be laid off because of this globally. Well, it’s a big number, and surprising as well, when there are so many projects ahead this reduction seems drastic.
For sometime PlayStation 5 Pro and PlayStation 6 are in news, there are even news that GTA VI and PlayStation 6 will come together making the deadliest combination ever.
However, till now Sony hasn’t confirmed the existence of PlayStation 5 Pro while it does talk about PlayStation 6 on some instances. Hence, players and the entire gaming industry is confused now and wondering what will be the future projects of Sony regarding PlayStation Studios.
Talking about the Studios that are expected to affect after this news, there are many. In fact, one of the most affected studios that is going to be closed is the London one. And it is really disheartening because it will be closed after 22 year since its establishments.
With the closing of the studio, all its projects are also canceled, including Blood & Truth. With that, some other successful studios are also affected. They include Naughty Dog, Guerrilla Games, and Insomniac.
Commenting on this significant lay off, Head of PlayStation Studios, Herman Hulst said,
“We looked at our studio and our portfolio, evaluating projects in various stages of development, and have decided that some of those projects will not move forward.
I want to be clear that the decision to stop work on these projects is not a reflection on the talent or passion of team members.
Our philosophy has always been to allow creative experimentation. Sometimes, great ideas don’t become great games. Sometimes, a project is started with the best intention before shifts within the market or industry result in a change of plan.
