Snapdragon 888 Plus is similar to Snapdragon 888 in every way except for slight high clock speeds

Few days, the chipmaker Qualcomm announced its Snapdragon 888 Plus, and as we know, the chip is a slightly overclocked variant of the Snapdragon 888. The chip will reportedly be sported some flagship android devices coming out in the second half of 2021.

Speaking about both the chips, the Snapdragon 888 Plus and Snapdragon 888 are both manufactured using Samsung’s 5nm LPE architecture, so the CPU cluster remains the same, and both are also divided in the 1 + 3 + 4 configuration.

Similar to the Snapdragon 888, the Snapdragon 888 Plus also features the same Adreno 660 GPU operating at 840MHz. So when comparing the graphics capabilities of the two chips there will be hardly any differences to be noted. However, Qualcomm decided against using its latest and greatest Snapdragon X65 5G modem in the Snapdragon 888 Plus. Instead, it used the older Snapdragon X60, which also on the Snapdragon 888.

The Snapdragon 888 Plus also has support for LPDDR5 at 3200MHz, similar to that of the non plus variant. And offers a memory bandwidth of 51.2GB/s.

Now coming to the differences between the two chips, to be frank, there are only two differences to report. In the Snapdragon 888 Plus, the clock speed of the single Kryo 680 core based on the Cortex-X1 operates at 2.995GHz, whereas in the Snapdragon 888 it runs at 2.84GHz.

  • Snapdragon 888 Plus – 1 x Kryo 680 (based on Cortex-X1) running at 2.995GHz, 3 x Kryo 680 (based on Cortex-A78) running at 2.42GHz, and 4 x Kryo 680 (based on Cortex-A55) running at 1.80GHz.
  • Snapdragon 888 – 1 x Kryo 680 (based on Cortex-X1) running at 2.84GHz, 3 x Kryo 680 (based on Cortex-A78) running at 2.42GHz, and 4 x Kryo 680 (based on Cortex-A55) running at 1.80GHz.

Coming to the main topic, the AI performance of the Snapdragon 888 Plus has been upgraded to 32TOPS, which gives the Plus variant a 20 percent increase compared to the Snapdragon 888’s AI performance of 26TOPS. According to some leaks, it seems that Samsung is planning to launch it’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 powered by Snapdragon 888 and not with Snapdragon 888 Plus. However, given the similarities between the two, it seems like an acceptable option.
