A big leak has some very exciting details on the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, effectively confirming that Qualcomm plans to come out swinging with two versions of its next major chipset both featuring an all-new Adreno 8-series GPU for superior graphics quality and power efficiency. Although information about the Adreno 830 GPU is hard to come by, a tipster has mentioned it goes at 25% higher clock speed than those in Adreno 750 in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

More About the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4

Shortly after the leak, Ice Universe provided additional information on Weibo, noting that the Adreno 830 is currently being tested at 1,250MHz. By contrast, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 managed just an overclocked Adreno 750 at 1,000MHz, with its speeds not guaranteed in any sustained way.

It is expected that the shift to TSMC’s second-gen 3nm node in Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will enable improved power efficiency, thus enabling a harmonious relationship with Adreno GPU clocked at up to but not exceeding 1.25GHz. Nonetheless, it’s still unclear whether such speeds would be available in the standard version or limited to the performance configuration of said chipset.

The increase in clock speeds may have helped the Adreno 830 be faster than the M2 and appear better in these Wild Gear Life Extreme benchmarks. If this is the case, we could see that the new Adreno 830 become one of (if not) the fastest smartphone GPUs available today. There may also be updates from Qualcomm, such as improvements for memory compression and “GPU Interpolation Technology” or what sounds like NVIDIA’s Frame Generation in their RTX 4000 series GPUs.

Remember that the higher clock speeds in testing may not mean similar performance under commercial conditions with things like ambient temperature or smartphone cooling solutions. We look forward to seeing the Adreno 830 in action to provide a comprehensive comparison with competitors.
