On August 13, Saturday, the Bangladesh Cricket Board appointed Shakib Al Hasan as their new T20I skipper till the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup which will be held in Australia in the latter part of this year.
The announcement was made soon after Shakib Al Hasan pulled out of his contentions deal with Betwinner and had a closed-door meeting with BCB Chief Nazmul Hasan at his home.
Prior to the Asia Cup, Bangladesh made several transformations in their T20 squad for the forthcoming Asia Cup. Their team member, Liton Das won’t be a part of this tournament due to his injuries. Along with Shakib AL Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Sabbir Rahman, Ebadat Hossain, and Mohammad Saifuddin also returned to the squad.
BCB also included Nurul Hasan who had been ruled out earlier due to his injury. Nurul had an operation and the stitch is expected to be removed on August 21. “We will see where he stands and so we are keeping him in the squad,” BCB chief selector Minhajul Abedin said while announcing the squad.
Minhajul also stated that they had included Sabbir Rahman since they wanted a hard-hitting batter in the lower order.
This is what BCB’s cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus has to say regarding the Betwinner controversy:
“Shakib admitted his mistake (regarding Betwinner controversy), but he is important for us,” Yunus said. “He is still our best player. We had already decided on Shakib being the captain earlier, so we are sticking to it. He thought it was an online news website. He felt he was misguided. He has said he has terminated the (Betwinner) contract. We are hopeful he will not repeat it again. We have asked him not to commit such a mistake again. We have ended the whole thing.”
Bangladesh had missed their initial deadline for naming the Asia Cup squad since the board was solving the Shakib sponsorship issue. Along with Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and a qualifying team are a part of this edition’s Asia Cup.
