A Crumbling Palace, Two Royal Strangers, One Hotel With Secrets — ‘Welcome to Khoya Mahal’ Teaser Is Gloriously Mysterious

Check-in time is uncertain — but you’re definitely going to want a room. Amazon Prime Video has dropped the first teaser for Welcome to Khoya Mahal — a quirky, mysterious new drama series created and directed by Konkona Sensharma and Jaydeep Sarkar, starring Aditi Rao Hydari and Barun Sobti as half-siblings sharing screen space together for the very first time. And from the very first frame, this is clearly unlike anything Prime Video has made before.

Welcome to Khoya Mahal — All the Key Details

What Is Welcome to Khoya Mahal About?

The official logline reads: “Kanishk and Kanupriya — ex-royals and half-siblings united by a crumbling inheritance — are forced to take over their family’s remote heritage hotel, The Khoya Mahal. Desperate to escape, they hatch a reckless plan to free themselves, unaware that Khoya Mahal has plans of its own.”

The minute-long teaser introduces viewers to the eerie charm of Khoya Mahal — opening with Aditi’s character welcoming guests with a calm, almost deceptive assurance of “peace and tranquillity,” before quickly cutting to glimpses of eccentric characters and an increasingly strange atmosphere.

It feels like the Indian cousin of Fawlty Towers filtered through a gothic heritage aesthetic — warm and funny on the surface, deeply unsettling underneath. Exactly the kind of show that sneaks up on you and refuses to let go.

The Dream Creative Team?

Konkona Sensharma made her feature directorial debut with A Death in the Gunj (2017), featuring Vikrant Massey, Om Puri, Kalki Koechlin, and Jim Sarbh — and followed it with a segment in Netflix’s Lust Stories 2 (2023). Welcome to Khoya Mahal marks her most ambitious directorial venture yet.

Pairing her with Jaydeep Sarkar — the writer of Tumhari Sulu and Sardar Udham — creates a writer-director combination with extraordinary range. The ensemble is completed by none other than Aparna Sen — Konkona’s real-life mother — whose inclusion adds a deeply personal and poetic dimension to the project.

Aditi, last seen in Gandhi Talks, has multiple exciting projects lined up including Imtiaz Ali’s Saathi Re, while Barun Sobti is currently basking in the success of Kohrra 2 — both arriving at this project at the peak of their creative powers.
