Sanjeev Sanyal Accepts Chancellorship of Pune’s Gokhale Institute
New Delhi: Economist Sanjeev Sanyal, a prominent member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM), has been appointed the Chancellor of Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE), Pune. This comes 10 days after Bibek Debroy, the former Chancellor, resigned following legal developments involving Vice-Chancellor Ajit Ranade.

Sanyal expressed his enthusiasm for the new role on social media platform X, stating, “I have accepted the Chancellorship of Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune. I look forward to collaborating with the faculty, staff, and students to build upon GIPE’s rich legacy.”
He further clarified the nature of his position, describing the Chancellor’s role as similar to a “non-executive chairman,” focusing on governance and strategic direction rather than day-to-day operations. Sanyal also assured that this role would not interfere with his duties as a full-time member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council.
This leadership transition at GIPE follows Debroy’s resignation on September 27, a day after the Bombay High Court extended interim relief to Vice-Chancellor Ajit Ranade, whose appointment had been challenged over alleged violations of University Grants Commission (UGC) norms. The court ruling allowed Ranade to continue in his position as VC until October 7.
Debroy, who had initially appointed Ranade, stated in an email that the court’s stay order vindicated Ranade’s position, which led Debroy to step down from his chancellorship on moral grounds.
