Samsung’s upcoming “Hexa²pixel” sensor to hit 450MP resolution

Samsung has declared several 200MP sensors, calling them the ISOCELL HP1 from 2021, and accomplishing with the ISOCELL HP3. One would think when the Korean company will stop pushing forward with these high megapixel sensors, but as per the recent hints and some calculations, it is just getting started and could launch a 450MP sensor with the Hexa²pixel earmarking in the future.

Samsung is anticipated to launch the “Hexa²pixel” sensor

The term “Hexa²pixel” was badged by Samsung, which the paperwork narrates as “image sensors for photographic devices.”

As per a leaker, this sensor has the ability of 36-in-1 pixel binning (a group of 6×6 pixels paired into one), which is far larger than what Tetracell and Nonapixel are adept at (2×2 and 3×3, respectively). If we think that the aim is 12MP image output (as was the case with the previous two), we may calculate the resolution. It comes out to 432MP, though, it may also be rounded to 450 MP. It will more than double the resolution of Samsung’s 200MP sensors, such as ISOCELL HP1 and HP3. It has a 1/1.22″ (0.64 µm pixels) size.)

Both HP sensors feature “Tetra²pixel” color filters, which allow them to perform 4×4 and 2×2 pixel binning for 12MP and 50MP outputs, respectively. Given the name of the new sensor “²,” it will most likely have two outputs. 6×6 and 3×3 are the chances. If so, it will be able to generate 12MP and 48MP resolution images, respectively. Binning would be needed because even if the sensor is big enough, packing that many pixels into a tiny area would make them look unimportant.

Some leaks asserted that it is working on sensors with resolutions as high as 600MP (with a huge 1/0.57″ optical format), so this Hexa²pixel sensor might describe just the beginning of what’s to come in the next few years.

Smartphone camera sensors are usually smaller, so a high megapixel value will mean that pixels will also be smaller, resulting in less light getting captured by those pixels. To reimburse for these restrictions, it would have to produce a 1-inch sensor size like the one present on the Xiaomi 12S Ultra.
