Samsung is reportedly planning to make a switch from OLED to Micro LED displays for its Galaxy Watch. This transition could take place within a year. Samsung has previously unveiled Micro LED technology for its larger TVs, ranging from 76 inches to 114 inches.

According to GizmoChina, Samsung is developing a Micro LED display for its smartwatches, with the product expected to reach consumers within a year, following a year of research and development. The smartwatch featuring a Micro LED display may be named the “Galaxy Watch Ultra” and is expected to offer improved features in addition to the new display technology.

The Upcoming Galaxy Watch Lineup with Micro LED Displays

Micro LED displays are composed of ultra-small LEDs measuring less than 100 micrometers, which are thinner than human hair and do not require a backlight or color filter. This results in enhanced brightness and image quality. Samsung uses Micro LED technology with LEDs smaller than 50 micrometers and inorganic materials for the RGB (Red, Green, Blue) elements to ensure long-lasting and high-quality brightness and image quality for over 100,000 hours. These Micro LED displays offer an immersive content experience for TVs.

While a Micro LED display could be integrated into a smartwatch, it raises questions about its adaptation for smartphones, as the cost could be considerable. For reference, the factory price of Samsung’s 89-inch Micro LED display is around 130 million won, approximately ₹80,02,387. Samsung has not officially announced the use of a Micro LED display in its smartwatches, so details such as price and features remain unknown.

Samsung’s latest smartwatch, the Galaxy Watch 6, features a Super AMOLED display and comes in 40mm and 44mm dial options. It is available in a more expensive Galaxy Watch 6 Classic variant, offered in 43mm and 47mm sizes. The price for the Galaxy Watch 6 in India starts at ₹29,999 and goes up to ₹39,999 for the 47mm Classic variant, but it may be available at a slightly lower price during festive sales on e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart.

The Galaxy Watch 6 is powered by an Exynos W930 dual-core SoC with 2GB RAM and 16GB of storage. The regular version has a 300mAh battery, while the Classic variant features a 425mAh battery. Both models run on One UI 5 Watch, based on Wear OS 4.
