Something is stirring beneath the surface of Korean cinema in 2026 — and it has 3 million witnesses. Salmokji: Whispering Water, the folk horror film starring Kim Hye-yoon and Lee Jong-won, has just achieved a milestone no Korean horror movie has reached in over two decades.
Salmokji: Whispering Water- The Record-Breaking Numbers
On May 10, the Korean Film Council announced that Salmokji: Whispering Water had officially surpassed 3 million moviegoers. The film was released on April 8, meaning it took less than 33 days to reach the milestone.
Earlier this week, the film overtook the hit 2018 movie Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum — which drew a total of 2.68 million moviegoers — to become the second most-attended Korean horror film in box office history. soompi
Korean Horror Box Office — All-Time Rankings
| Rank | Film | Year | Total Admissions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🥇 1 | A Tale of Two Sisters | 2003 | 3.14 million |
| 🥈 2 | Salmokji: Whispering Water | 2026 | 3 million+ (ongoing) |
| 🥉 3 | Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum | 2018 | 2.68 million |
At present, the only Korean horror film to record more admissions is the classic 2003 movie A Tale of Two Sisters, which drew 3.14 million moviegoers over the course of its entire run. With Salmokji still in cinemas, that all-time record is now firmly within reach.
The film was made on a budget of just US$2.02 million and has already earned US$16.62 million at the box office — a staggering return that underlines the power of a well-executed horror concept. Wikipedia
What Is Salmokji: Whispering Water About?
A reshoot is required after a mysterious figure appears in earlier road-view footage. Despite the dread surrounding the location, Su-in leads the crew in place of her senior colleague, who previously vanished after visiting the area. The shoot quickly unravels as crew members experience disturbing phenomena — and as the deep end of Salmokji reveals traces of something lurking beneath the surface, the team is forced to confront a presence that refuses to remain unseen.
Director Lee Sang-min took inspiration from the Gonjiam playbook — filming on location at the real Salmokji reservoir in South Chungcheong Province, already known as a site haunted by “water ghosts,” spirits of the dead said to be restricted to bodies of water. According to Wikipedia, this is Lee Sang-min’s feature directorial debut. Bloody Disgusting!City on Fire
