Chris Evans, Anya Taylor-Joy, a Greek island and a volcano: on paper, Sacrifice sounds like a sure-fire watch. But does the film live up to its pitch?

What’s the Story of Sacrifice ?

Mike Tyler (Chris Evans) is an actor stepping back into the spotlight after a viral meltdown on his last set. His comeback stage is a glitzy charity gala on a Greek island, raising money to fight climate change. Among the guests are tech billionaire Ben Bracken (Vincent Cassel) and his pop-star wife Gloria (Salma Hayek-Pinault).

Then the party turns dangerous. A radical group led by Joan (Anya Taylor-Joy) storms the event with a chilling plan: sacrifice three people to a nearby volcano before it erupts and dooms the world.

Where It Works?

The first act mocks wealthy donors who treat climate causes as a photo opportunity. Gloria’s flood-themed album is a fine example. Evans plays the self-absorbed actor with enough charm to keep you watching. Gavras also brings his signature style: booming choral music, fiery colours and moody landscapes shot partly in Iceland.

Where It Stumbles?

The satire is broad and plays like a long sketch comedy bit. Once the hostage drama begins, the film loses focus. Dream sequences and increasingly wild plot turns blur the political point, and Joan’s backstory makes her feel less commanding than she first appears. The reviewer’s verdict is that the script wastes a game cast, and that the film feels like an inside joke the audience isn’t in on.

The standout is Taylor-Joy, whose confident performance is called the film’s saving grace. If Gavras’s style interests you, read more about the director on Wikipedia. His earlier Netflix film Athena is a good place to start.

Should You Watch It?

Watch it for the cast and the visuals, and go in with modest expectations. Fans of Don’t Look Up may enjoy the premise, even if the execution is messier.
