Rohit Sharma : India’s cricket captain Rohit Sharma has secured the backing of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the selection committee to lead the team in the upcoming five-match Test series against England in June. Speculations had been rife about his future in red-ball cricket, but India’s triumph in the Champions Trophy 2025 has strengthened his case as the right candidate for the leadership role.

“He has shown what he can do. Every stakeholder feels that he is the right candidate to lead the Indian side for the tour of England. Rohit too has expressed his eagerness to keep playing red-ball cricket,” said a source.

Speculation Over Rohit’s Test Future

Rohit’s Test captaincy came under scrutiny after India suffered series defeats against New Zealand and Australia earlier this year. Adding to the speculation, he dropped himself from the playing XI in the final Test against Australia, leading to reports that selectors were already searching for a successor.

However, following the Champions Trophy victory, the selectors seem to have regained faith in his leadership abilities. Rohit, who led India to a historic title win, also reaffirmed his commitment to Test cricket and dismissed any retirement rumors.

Rohit’s Determination to Continue in Red-Ball Cricket

Earlier in January 2025, Rohit had clearly stated that he had no intention of retiring from Test cricket. He emphasized that he was going through a rough patch but was confident of making a comeback. After lifting the Champions Trophy, he reiterated a similar stance regarding ODIs as well.

“There is no guarantee that runs won’t come five or two months down the line. I have seen a lot of cricket. Life changes every second, every minute, every day. I have confidence in myself that things can change, but at the same time, I have to be realistic as well,” Rohit said in an interview with Star Sports.

India’s Tour of England 2025: What’s Next?

The five-match Test series against England will begin on June 20, 2025, at Headingley. This tour will be a crucial one for India as they aim to bounce back in the World Test Championship standings.

With the full backing of the BCCI and selectors, Rohit Sharma now has the challenge of leading India to victory on English soil, a feat that has always been a tough task for visiting teams. The upcoming series will also be an opportunity for Rohit to silence his critics and cement his legacy as one of India’s most successful Test captains.
