Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of Robin Olsen on a permanent deal from Roma. The Midlands club have paid €3.5 million to the Europa Conference League winners to make the transfer permanent, as they wanted to keep him.
He spent the initial part of the season on loan at Sheffield United in the Championship, and joined Aston Villa in the January transfer window. Despite only making one appearance during the entirety of his loan spell, he is now set to join the club on a long-term deal.
Robin Olsen joins Aston Villa permanently
Here is the official announcement made by the Birmingham-based club regarding the acquisition of the goalkeeper: “Aston Villa is pleased to announce the signing of Robin Olsen for an undisclosed fee.
The Swedish goalkeeper joins from AS Roma on a permanent deal having spent the second half of last season on loan at Villa Park.
The experienced international, capped over 50 times by his country, has represented clubs in Sweden, Greece, Denmark and in Italy across his career and has previously played Premier League football with Everton.”
Emiliano Martinez is still expected to be the first choice goalkeeper in the team. However, the presence of Olsen will provide good competition for the Argentinian. The Swede is his country’s first choice keeper, and has been capped 58 times. As a result, he will want to be in top shape to challenge his teammate for a place between the sticks whenever possible.
