Santiago Bernabeu has been the home of Real Madrid since it’s inauguration in 1947. The LaLiga giant has numerous victories and unforgettable memories at the Bernabeu. But surprisingly they won’t play any of the remaining matches of the 2019-20 season at the Santiago Bernabeu.

This decision has been taken as Santiago Bernabeu is undergoing renovation work. This £500m renovation would see a retractable roof, steel facade, a removable pitch will be kept so the arena can be used for other events such as concerts and new main entrance among many other things.

It was scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2022. But it now seems the renovation work will be over before schedule because of this decision by club president Florentino Perez.

Real Madrid will play the remaining matches of this season at their 6,000-seater Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano, located at the club’s Valdebebas training complex. Work is now underway to install new floodlights, advertising space and VAR technology ahead of the return of LaLiga.

Perez wrote a letter to the club’s supporters, saying: “We have made the decision to play in the Alfredo Di Stefano stadium in our Ciudad Real Madrid all the games in which we will play as the home team. The decision will allow us to advance in the works of the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.”

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois said about the change in the stadium: “I don’t think it will work against us [playing away from the Bernabeu]. It’s an honour to play at a stadium named after a legend – the best player in Real Madrid’ history.”

“For the history of the club, it would be very nice to win the league there. The training sessions we have had there have been going well and I can’t see us having any problems playing there.”

Real Madrid will resume their campaign on 14th June. They will host Eibar on Sunday at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano. They are 2 points behind league leaders Barcelona.
