The Santiago Bernabeu has been under construction since March. Real Madrid has been playing at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano since. The next LaLiga season is set to begin on August 13. This turf wouldn’t be sufficient considering the fact that 20,000-30,000 fans might be allowed to match fixtures. Real Madrid is considering adopting a surprising home – Wanda Metropolitano.
Los Blancos have enquired Atletico Madrid if they could play at the home of the Colchoneros. This would allow them to accommodate the 20,000 and 30,000 supporters in the next season. This is the latest update on their ‘Operation Return to the Bernabeu’.
Atletico at Real’s disposition
There has always been a healthy relationship between the otherwise rival clubs. Atletico Madrid has even declared that they will be prepared to host Real Madrid matches at the Wanda Metropolitano while Bernabeu is being renovated. Enrique Cerezo also stated last year that, “Let us be clear that we are at Real Madrid’s disposition.”
Real Madrid is in no hurry to move back to Bernabeu. They want to take full advantage of the economic injection through playing at Wanda Metropolitano. Closing the Bernabeu has lowered the costs as this has allowed the construction workers to do the renovations with full efficiency. This doesn’t mean that Real Madrid would turn a blind eye towards the economic and sporting merits of having fans back at the games.
Real hope to return to their home between September and October. They have also asked LaLiga to try and adjust their calendar in a way that they can play as many away matches as possible till they are back.
