Real Madrid fans who are also gamers are in for a real treat as gaming console company PlayStation have announced a term agreement with the Spanish football giants. This will see both the entities work together in collaboration to share their resources and expand the promotional capacity of the brands. It will majorly include the men’s and women’s football and basketball teams as the expansion plans.
Liliana Laporte, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Iberia, was quoted as saying, “We are very happy to announce this strategic alliance between PlayStation and Real Madrid. This will maximise the efforts of both brands to provide many hours of entertainment to millions of people both in the traditional and virtual sports environments. We’re really eager to see how far we can go together in the future.”
Part of the partnership will see all PlayStation products be available to interested gamers, which includes the PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now. The current existing model of PS4 and the to-be-launched PS5 will also be part of the agreement and become official consoles of Real Madrid. This news comes as an interesting development from perspectives of sports teams investing in technology as well as a larger cross-functional sports marketing arrangement. The special bundle consisting of a customised Real Madrid-branded PlayStation 4 Pro console, DualShock 4 wireless controller, 1 TB hard drive and a copy of EA Sports’ FIFA 21, have been released on October 9.
Earlier last year in 2019, news had been reported that Real Madrid were planning to invest significantly in gaming and eSports. This included setting up some concrete infrastructure and an eSports arena, to facilitate its gamers and practice zones. Considering that has been the trend with a few football clubs like Roma, PSG and Man City all having separate gaming entities, it is expected a leader like Real Madrid will also jump into an exciting and lucrative market.
