RCB's Perfect WPL 2024 Auction: Smriti Mandhana Credits Bowling Side Win

Listen up, cricket fans! We’ve got some exciting news from the Women’s Premier League, or WPL 2024 Player Auction. The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) hit it out of the park with their strategic player picks this Saturday in Mumbai.

WPL 2024 Auction: Good bowling side wins the competition, says skipper Smriti Mandhana as Royal Challengers Bangalore ticks all boxes

With seven open spots on their roster, RCB’s backroom gurus, including head coach Luke Williams and head scout Malolan Rangarajan, were all set to play their masterstroke. With advice from their skipper, Smriti Mandhana, they’ve managed to assemble a squad that screams ‘bold’ – the RCB way!

Mandhana was all smiles as she talked about the auction. She revealed that the team had been planning this moment since the end of the last season, with an emphasis on experienced bowlers who know their way around Indian pitches.

And boy, did they deliver! RCB has roped in Ekta Bisht, a veteran spinner and Khel Ratna awardee, for a cool ₹60 lakh. Bisht is also the first Indian woman to score a hat-trick in T20 Internationals. Talk about star power! Joining her are England’s Kate Cross (₹30 lakh) and India’s young all-rounder, Simran Bahadur (₹30 lakh), adding pace to their bowling attack.

RCB didn’t forget their roots, though. They picked up local talent Shubha Satheesh (₹10 lakh) from Bengaluru and added S Meghana (₹30 lakh), a member of the 2016 Women’s Asia Cup-winning team, to the mix. To round off their foreign player quota, they’ve signed Australian spin all-rounders Georgia Wareham (₹40 lakh) and Sophie Molineux (₹30 lakh). Now that’s what we call a powerhouse squad!

Rajesh V Menon, VP and Head of RCB, shared his thoughts on their strategy: “We build the team brick by brick each season. Our goal was to learn from last year, fill in the gaps, and create a balanced, flexible squad that can handle any conditions.”

RCB’s ‘Play Bold’ philosophy shines through in their choice of players, with a perfect blend of batting and bowling skills.

Mandhana further added, “We wanted to strengthen our spin unit and find overseas pacers who can complement Renuka [Singh]. With Kate Cross, Molineux, Wareham, and our own Shreyanka [Patil], Sophie Devine, and Ellyse Perry, our bowling looks rock solid.”

Malolan, the assistant head coach and head of scouting, also chimed in on their auction strategy: “We’ve got a strong Indian domestic core with Mandhana, Ghosh, Singh, Ahuja, and Patil. Add Devine, Perry, and Knight, and we’ve already solved half the puzzle. Our focus was to create a well-balanced bowling unit that can perform under any conditions.”

Here’s the full breakdown of the RCB squad for WPL 2024:

Retained Players: Smriti Mandhana, Asha Shobana, Disha Kasat, Ellyse Perry, Heather Knight, Indrani Roy, Kanika Ahuja, Renuka Singh, Richa Ghosh, Shreyanka Patil, Sophie Devine.

New Buys: Georgia Wareham (₹40 lakh), Kate Cross (₹30 lakh), Ekta Bisht (₹60 lakh), Shubha Satheesh (₹10 lakh), S Meghana (₹30 lakh), Simran Bahadur (₹30 lakh), Sophie Molineux (₹30 lakh).

Stay tuned for more updates and get ready to cheer for this bold and balanced team!
