Formula 1 could have a completely new and exhilarating look on TV, with the arrival of the RBD-1 drone. The new Red Bull Drone is capable of flying at over 300 kmph and record high quality footage steadily, which makes for a very exciting prospect when it comes to close-up angles of a race or a duel.Â
With a signal range of 10 kilometres and a battery life of 3 minutes, it is enough to capture two laps in a race or a heated duel between two cars. Although the drone hasn’t received the green light from the authorities, its existence creates a massive opportunity for a never seen before experience when it comes to footage from the race course.
RBD-1 drone set to change the way Formula 1 races lookÂ
Aerial drone shots are not new in Formula 1, with the top view of tracks now common. But, to be able to keep up with a Formula 1 car is something that has never been done before, especially by a drone. To test out its capabilities, the RBD-1 drone went head to head with World Champion Max Verstappen, who was very impressed by it.Â
“I was really surprised how fast I could keep up with the pace and also how close I could get in the corners, how it turns. It gives a bit of a different perspective to watch Formula 1,” the Dutchman added.
The drone was formulated by Red Bull Advanced Technologies, the engineering arm of the team. It can accelerate twice as fast as a Formula 1 car, hitting speeds of 300 kmph in just four seconds. It took more than a year for the creation to come to life, and now that it is here – we could be set for a brand new look at races from 2024 onwards.Â
