Raphael Guerreiro is set to join Bayern Munich as a free agent. The former Borussia Dortmund left-back becomes the latest player to cross the Bayern-Dortmund divide and will sign for them in the coming days. He has agreed a contract with the Bavarians until 2026, as was the priority for the player.
The formalities have been completed to seal the transfer, and Guerreiro will be presented as the latest player to cross the Bayern-Dortmund divide after the summer 2023 international break.
There was interest from Atletico Madrid and Nice in France as well, but the player was always clear about his desire to sign for Bayern. And now, he has got the move that he wanted.
Raphael Guerreiro Bayern Munich transfer confirmed
The Portugal international joined Dortmund in 2016 from French club Lorient for €12 million. He has made 224 appearances for the club over the last seven years, scoring 40 goals and providing 50 assists across all competitions. With Dortmund, he lifted the DFB Pokal in 16/17 and 20/21, while also winning the DFB Super Cup in 19/20.
Guerreiro enjoyed a resurgence this past season, acquiring a new position in midfield which allowed him to influence the game in a unique manner. He provided 14 assists and scored six goals in 36 games across all competitions, which is a remarkable return for a defender.
And now, he will be playing alongside Alphonso Davies at the left-back position at Bayern Munich. The Bundesliga champions chose not to make the loan move for Joao Cancelo permanent, and Raphael Guerreiro will be replacing his compatriot at the club.
Have Dortmund replaced Raphael Guerreiro already?
The black and yellow club have agreed a deal for Ramy Bensebaini of Borussia Monchengladbach to join on a free transfer. The Algerian left-back will be the natural replacement for Raphael Guerreiro in the line-up. The club has confirmed the 28-year-old’s arrival on their official social media platforms, and he will soon be given a squad number too.
Dortmund have also parted ways with Felix Passlack, Mahmoud Dahoud and Anthony Modeste on a free transfer, upon the expiry of their contracts. The club also sold Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid in a record fee worth €134 million, and will be looking at Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez as the replacement for Bellingham.
