The 2022 Qatar World Cup has been in the headlines for many controversial reasons. And the negativities only rise in number with the recent updates from the host country.

Journalists are reportedly being threatened, and even robbed for their coverage of the tournament. A Danish TV crew, led by Rasmus Tantholdt, was told that their camera could be broken because officials thought they didn’t have a permit. ‘You invited the whole world to come here, why can’t we film? It’s a public place,’ he told them.

An Argentine journalist, Dominique Metzger, was robbed during a live show. The security personnel told her, speaking of what action she wished them to take:

“What justice do you want? What sentence do you want us to give him? Do you want him to be sentenced to five years in prison? Do you want him to be deported?”

Moreover, a US journalist, Grant Wahl, was not allowed to enter a stadium wearing a rainbow t-shirt in support of the LGBTQ community. When he tweeted about the issues his phone was taken away.

European teams have also not been allowed to wear the One Love armband in support of the LGBTQ community at the World Cup. The noise apart from football, is as a result, diverting the attention away from the sport.
