Paris Saint Germain suffered their first defeat of the 2021/21 Ligue 1 season against Stade Rennes. Before this game PSG had won all their games and were sitting at the top of the league with 24 points.

However, Rennes stunned Psg by scoring a 2-0 victory at the Roazhon Park over them. The Parisian side had fielded their strongest front line that consisted of Lionel Messi, Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Angel Di Maria.

Although Paris’ star attack displayed an underwhelming performance as they only created two big chances in the entire game. In the first half, Mbappe and Neymar smashed their shots over the crossbar meanwhile, Messi came the closest to score as his free-kick shattered the back of the crossbar in the 31st minute.

Subsequently, Rennes drew the first blood as they countered a Paris attack and Sulemana delivered a beautiful cross from the left wing to the penalty area, which Rennes forward Laborda powered it back into Donnaruma’s net. As a result, Psg went into the break with a goal down.

However, Paris Saint Germain’s misery continued in the second half as Stade Rennes doubled their lead straightaway after the restart. It was Laborde again who was involved as he drilled a low cross from the right-wing which is met by Tait and he slid in the ball into the bottom left corner. With this goal PSG required to score two goals within 44 minutes to at least maintain their undefeated streak.

One would expect PSG to come back after conceding two goals. And they almost got one goal back as Mbappe found the back of the net at the 68th minute to be only ruled as offside. Later on, Paris Saint Germain created few chances but were not able to finish those opportunities.

In the end, Rennes maintained their lead and secured a big upset over Ligue 1 giants. Following this defeat, PSG have lost their status as the top five teams that were yet to be defeated in their respective leagues.

Although they are still sitting comfortably at the top of the Ligue 1 table with 24 points and have a lead of 6 points over second-placed Lens. As a result, this loss will not affect them as their players will head into the international break with a safe cushion.
