Gaijin Entertainment has released two games upgraded for Sony‘s new PS5 Pro console, the tactical WWII shooter Enlisted in 2020 and the long-running vehicle combat game War Thunder which has seen continuous updates since 2013.

PS5 Pro Upgrade Less Significant Than PS4 Pro, Says Dev; PSSR Matches DLSS/XeSS, Outshines AMD FSR

In order to learn how these games are utilizing the enhanced capabilities of the PS5 Pro, we reached out to Gaijin’s Dagor Engine Graphics Programmer Gergo Horvath. Horvath observed that the upgrade from PS5 to PS5 Pro is “the gradual step up” compared to what was seen from PS4 to PS4 Pro, but that the PS5 Pro fulfills its mission statement by and large because of PSSR. He pointed out that PSSR pegged NVIDIA DLSS and Intel XeSS for performance while outperforming AMD FSR.

The Machine Learning Architecture that PS5 Pro should benefit from is a big deal, as it allows high visual fidelity even at lower resolutions while also allowing resources to be allocated to ray tracing. Horvath mentioned the Pro got a ‘boost for the GPU’ but said this boost is not as scary as getting from PS4 to PS4 Pro, which was intended for 4K gaming. The new target instead is the ability to offer even faster ray tracing, which the PS5 Pro has no problem doing.

Gaijin mostly used dynamic resolution scaling with upscaling for a steady frame rate for the PS5 Pro version of Enlisted. This change, along with faster memory for the Pro, enables 4K at 120 FPS and additional visual fidelity through better textures and lighting. Similarly, War Thunder will support 4K at 120 FPS on the Pro and will receive additional visual updates soon.

Horvath mentioned that PSSR performs on par with NVIDIA DLSS and Intel XeSS while offering less blur and flickering than AMD FSR. Gaijin’s current optimizations have pushed Enlisted to about 75% of its potential on the PS5 Pro, with further updates to come. As for whether the PS5 Pro’s price is justified, Horvath emphasized that gamers often base their decisions on the experiences offered by the console rather than its specs alone.
