Manchester United have officially announced that they have agreed the signing of Raphael Varane from Real Madrid. The player was signed for a fee worth €50 million, and he has agreed a contract of four years with the Premier League club.
Here are the pros and cons of Real Madrid ending their decade-long association with Varane.
Cons
Along with Sergio Ramos, the Spanish giants have now lost both their first team centre-backs from last year. Varane established himself as one of the best defenders in the world, with Real Madrid, and the club are losing a big asset in the form of Varane.
Carlo Ancelotti will now have to assemble an entirely new line of central defense. And according to Florentino Perez, they will not sign a replacement for the two departed which leaves Madrid stranded for numbers at the back, especially if injuries hit them like last season.
Pros
Real Madrid have a squad at the end of its cycle, and with a sink or swim situation, they will have to turn to their existing choices of David Alaba, Nacho Fernandez, Eder Militao and returning loanee Jesus Vallejo.
Since all the players are young, and can be an integral part of the team for years to come, it is a good chance for Madrid to test things out for the long run. They have also made a decent amount of money from the transfer, with €50 million going a long way to ease their financial burdens.
