Manchester United and Real Madrid have agreed a deal for Raphael Varane to join the club, with a four-year contract on the table for the French centre-back. So, here are the pros and cons of Manchester United signing the player.
Cons
Can there be any cons for signing a world class defender for €50 million? Not quite, but when you consider that Varane only had one year left on his contract, a lot of people have commented that Manchester United overpaid. On the financial front, Manchester United have sunk further into negative transfer debt.
Lastly, they also have additional pressure to make Varane deliver after making the big switch to Old Trafford.
Pros
United now have the partner for Harry Maguire that they have been looking for. Varane was rumoured for the last few seasons, and he is now on his way to England. With this newfound partnership, the Red Devils can expect to challenge for the Premier League title as well as the Champions League and the two domestic cups.
Varane brings a lot of experience at the top level to the club. He has won everything there is to win playing club football, and was a part of the 2018 World Cup winning France squad. Also, he is only 29 and is at the peak of his abilities as an athlete which ensures that Ole Gunnar Solskjær has the best physical version of the Frenchman at his disposal now.
