Prom Queen Netflix Review: Sequins, Slashers & a Shaky Final Act — Is Fear Street’s Fourth Film Worth It?

Shadyside is back — and this time, the crown is deadly. Fear Street: Prom Queen, the fourth instalment in Netflix’s beloved Fear Street franchise, dropped on May 23, 2025, transporting us to 1988 where high school politics turn genuinely murderous. But does it deserve a spot on your watchlist, or does it stumble at the finish line? Let’s cut right to it.

Fear Street Prom Queen Netflix

The Setup: Mean Girls Meets Slasher Horror

Fear Street: Prom Queen follows Lori Granger (India Fowler), a kind-hearted outsider trying to shed her family’s dark reputation, as she enters the race for Prom Queen against the reigning “It Girl” Tiffany Falconer (Fina Strazza of Paper Girls). Predictably — because this is Shadyside — contestants start disappearing one by one on prom night. Think Carrie meets Mean Girls with a heavy dose of practical gore.

The film’s strongest asset is its atmosphere. The late-80s aesthetic — vintage outfits, era-appropriate needle drops, and neon-lit hallways — is lovingly recreated. The kills themselves are inventive and gloriously over-the-top, involving power saws and electrocution rather than your standard slasher knife, which horror fans will absolutely appreciate.

Where It Stumbles?

Here’s the honest truth: the first two-thirds are a fun, campy ride. But the third act lets it down badly. The villain reveal is painfully obvious, the final confrontation suffers from weak dialogue and awkward chemistry, and what should be a nerve-shredding finale ends up unintentionally comedic. As a standalone film without the rich lore of the original trilogy to lean on, Prom Queen occasionally feels untethered.

The MVPs are the two best friends — Megan (Suzanna Son) and Melissa (Ella Rubin) — who inject much-needed wit and unpredictability into proceedings.

Watch it if you like: Carrie, Heathers, Prom Night, Mean Girls, Stranger Things.
