Prime Video confirms The Rings of Power Season 3 Release Date: Middle-earth Returns This Year

During Amazon’s annual Upfront presentation on May 11, 2026, Prime Video confirmed that the eagerly awaited third season of epic fantasy series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will premiere on November 11, 2026. The announcement ended months of speculation about the return of the streaming giant’s most ambitious and expensive series, confirming that viewers will journey back to Middle-earth’s Second Age later this year. 

The Rings of Power Season 3 Release Details

The Hollywood Reporter was first to report the third season would launch in 2026, as opposed to the previously-held belief it would come in 2027. This is a slightly shorter wait than expected, as production has sped up compared to previous seasons. The show wrapped filming in December 2025, meaning it’s hitting screens in 11 months rather than the 20 months it took for Season 2.

A Record-Breaking Franchise

The globally successful and award-winning series has attracted over 185 million viewers worldwide and continues to be one of Amazon’s strongest drivers for new Prime membership sign-ups. Critics have praised the series for its epic scope and production values, and Seasons One and Two are Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

Through their respective 91-day post-premiere launch windows and ranked by viewers, Season One remains the biggest TV series premiere in the history of Prime Video, and Season Two is among the Top 5 most-watched returning seasons ever. Season Two debuted as the #1 Original Series on Nielsen’s Streaming Top 10 Chart and remained in the top 4 throughout its entire run.

Season 3 Plot: The War Begins

Jumping forward several years from the events of Season Two, Season Three takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war, bind all peoples to his will — and at last rule all Middle-earth. The fantasy hit will be returning later in 2026 as it features a time jump taking the action straight into the War of the Elves and Sauron. And speaking of the Dark Lord, based on the first-look image, he’s made some big changes too as his Annatar disguise is long gone.

What to Expect in Season 3

Season 3 is also expected to explore the origins of Rivendell, the downfall of Númenor, and Gandalf’s path as a wizard. That includes how the nine kings given rings were warped into the Nazgûl while the various forces of Middle-earth try to unite.

New Cast Additions

Season 3 welcomes several exciting new faces to Middle-earth. Bower has been tapped as a series regular for the upcoming third season of Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Details about the role are being kept under wraps, but Bower plays Rings of Power’s biggest new cast addition, a character described as “a handsome high-born knight” (code name Arlen) in casting information. He could be a new love interest for Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) who spent the second season facing the reality of her Season 1 love interest Halbrand’s (Charlie Vickers) true identity as arch-villain Sauron.

Additionally, Ray Donovan alum Eddie Marsan is set to recur on the new season. Since the role reportedly required a Scottish accent, the English actor could presumably be playing a dwarf — possibly Durin’s (Owain Arthur) brother who was referenced at the end of Season 2.

Production Journey

In August 2022, Amazon announced that it was moving production of the series from New Zealand, where Jackson’s films and the first season were made, to the United Kingdom starting with the second season. In February 2024, production for the third season was expected to be moved from Bray Film Studios in Berkshire, where the second season was filmed, to Shepperton Studios in Surrey. The cast and crew started filming Rings of Power Season 3 in April 2025. Production on the third season continued into December 2025 before wrapping on December 10.

The Five-Season Arc

Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay previously told TV Insider that they made Seasons 1 and 2 with a five-season plan in mind. “We have a five-year plan that we’ve had all along that’s not changing,” Payne confirmed. Amazon has five seasons planned in total, and with the One Ring finally entering the story this season, things are only going to get more intense from here.
