The film uses Ben’s former-beloved-pet status as its emotional core — this is horror that hurts precisely because the monster was once trusted. Kim Newman of Empire Magazine put it plainly: it is Cujo with a chimp and a pool instead of a dog and a car, and it delivers good, gruesome business with a sense of fun.
