Just when you thought Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal couldn’t hit any harder emotionally, Episode 8 delivers one of the most gut-wrenching moments of the entire series — without a single word of dialogue. This is masterclass storytelling, and the ending leaves fans with more questions than ever.

What Happens in Episode 8?

The episode cuts between two parallel storylines running simultaneously — and the contrast between them is deliberately agonising.
In the fighting pit: Zombie Spear, now in his undead form, is forcibly pushed into a brutal arena by a pale, ritualistic primordial tribe that seems to exist somewhere between the living and the dead. He is impaled in the first round — and just keeps fighting. Over six relentless rounds, Spear defeats increasingly powerful opponents, fuelled each time by a black volcanic liquid that physically hulks him up. By the end, this strange tribe doesn’t try to kill him. They crown him. They accept what he has become in a way no living village ever could.
Back in the village: Mira gives birth to a baby girl — a daughter who, according to those present, looks remarkably like Spear did when he was alive. Fang paces anxiously outside. When the baby arrives, Fang’s reaction is painfully bittersweet — she sees her old friend living on in this child, and it’s one of the most emotional moments the show has ever produced without a single word.\
The Ending — Spear Sees His Daughter, Then Disappears
After being crowned by the tribe, Spear mounts a flying dragon and rides back to the village. He arrives quietly, in the dark. He watches through the shadows as Mira holds their sleeping newborn daughter.
He knows. The visual storytelling makes it unmistakable — he understands this baby is his. He stands there, suspended between two worlds, and then he leaves. When Mira senses something and turns, he is already gone.
It’s devastating. And it raises the central question heading into the final two episodes: if Spear knows he has a daughter, why does he leave?
The answer the show implies is both simple and tragic. In his undead state, Spear is a terrifying figure to the living. The villagers attacked him violently earlier in the season just for appearing. His presence near Mira and his child would put them in danger. He has also, by the episode’s close, seemingly accepted a place among this strange undead tribe — people who don’t fear him. But Mira catches a glimpse of him. And the episode ends with her opening a map, determined to find him.
What’s Coming Next?
Episode 9, titled “The Hollow Crown”, drops March 8, 2026 on Adult Swim. The season finale follows on March 16, 2026. With Mira now on a mission to track Spear down, and Fang likely joining her despite her complicated feelings, the final two episodes look set to be some of the most emotionally intense of the entire series.
