Premier League 22/23 relegation battle: Leicester City, Leeds United and Southampton drop down to Championship

Southampton, Leicester City and Leeds United have been relegated from the Premier League, following the conclusion of the 22/23 season. The trio will be replaced by Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton Town, who will be coming up from the Championship.

Vincent Kompany’s Burnley won the second division following a remarkable season, and will be coming up as a side reborn. On the other hand, Luton Town will be coming up to the Premier League for the first time in their history, after formerly being a non-league side not too long ago.

Luton won the Championship playoffs to make their way into the Premier League, and will have to renovate their stadium for £10 million to make it up to standards before the start of the new season.

Leicester City were regular European contenders up until the season before. This time around, the 2016 Premier League winners have endured a shocking series of results which has relegated them from the top flight altogether.

Brendan Rodgers simply could not get his side firing this time around, and their lack of results has left them unable to avoid the drop. Some of the very top players in their squad, such as James Maddison, Harvey Barnes, Youri Tielemans and Caglar Soyuncu are now expected to leave this summer.

Southampton were confirmed to be relegated several weeks ago, having finished dead last in the Premier League. The sacking of Ralph Hassenhuttl did little to better results, and the Saints will now have to rebuild in the second division.

Leeds United, similarly, appointed Sam Allardyce to help them avoid the drop. But, Big Sam could not be of much help as they ended up finishing second last all the same.
