The Pokemon franchise is taking a bold leap into cozy life simulation with Pokemon Pokopia, and the latest extended trailer reveals something unexpected—brand new Pokemon variants that look like they’ve been living a little too comfortably on their deserted island. From a moss-covered Snorlax to a ghostly pale Pikachu, these “Peculiar Pokemon” are stealing hearts everywhere.

New Pokemon Pokopia Variants

Variant Name	Original Pokemon	Description	Unique Feature
Peakychu	Pikachu	Pale, ghostly appearance with droopy ears	Glowing, feeble-looking
Mosslax	Snorlax	Completely moss-covered body	Small flower blooming on head
Smearguru	Smeargle	Multi-colored paint splashes	Enhanced painter aesthetic
Professor Tangrowth	Tangrowth	Grey vines, beard-like appearance	Wears glasses and TM device

What Makes These Variants Special?

These new variants hint at Pokemon Pokopia’s central theme—creatures shaped and transformed by their environment over time. Unlike regional forms in mainline games, these variants tell environmental stories through their designs.

Peakychu: This pale version of the ever-popular electric mouse has bigger eyes and droopy ears, almost looking like a Ghost-type as it glows. The community is already speculating whether this could be the franchise’s first Electric/Ghost-type Pikachu variant. Its exhausted appearance suggests it’s been alone for quite some time.

Mosslax: This version of Snorlax has been asleep for so long that moss now covers its entire body, with a small flower blooming on its head. It’s the ultimate mood Pokemon—representing that feeling when you’ve been so cozy you’ve literally become part of the furniture.

Smearguru: A reimagined Smeargle whose body is splashed with various colors, embracing the painter aesthetic of the original even better than before. This simple yet effective redesign shows how absorbed Smeargle has become in its artistic pursuits.

Professor Tangrowth: Acting as your guide while you help restore the island, this Pokemon has been living alone for a long time, featuring grey vines atop its head resembling a beard, along with glasses and what looks like a TM on its head.

How Pokemon Pokopia Works

The game launches on March 5, 2026, exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2, putting players in the shoes of a Ditto who transformed into a human. Your goal is restoring an abandoned island by constructing homes, furniture, and Pokemon habitats from gathered resources like wood and stone.

By building various habitats for specific Pokemon types, Ditto can attract Pokemon to come live in the town of their own volition. The game blends Animal Crossing’s cozy vibes with Pokemon’s creature-collecting DNA, creating something genuinely fresh for the franchise.

Why This Matters for Pokemon Fans

Pokemon Pokopia represents The Pokemon Company’s first genuine attempt at a life simulation game. It’s also a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive launch title, making it a significant release for the new console generation. The introduction of environment-influenced variants opens fascinating narrative possibilities—these aren’t just regional forms, they’re Pokemon who’ve adapted to living alone for extended periods.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will these Pokopia variants appear in mainline Pokemon games?

Currently, there’s no confirmation whether Peakychu, Mosslax, Smearguru, and Professor Tangrowth will transfer to mainline titles like Pokemon Scarlet and Violet or future Generation 10 games. These appear to be Pokopia-exclusive variants designed specifically for this game’s environmental storytelling. However, fan reception has been overwhelmingly positive, so The Pokemon Company may consider incorporating them into future mainline entries depending on player demand.

Can I play Pokemon Pokopia on the original Nintendo Switch?

No, Pokemon Pokopia is exclusively designed for Nintendo Switch 2 and won’t be available on the original Switch console. However, the game does support GameShare functionality, meaning if you own the game on Switch 2, friends with original Switch systems can join your multiplayer sessions locally without owning their own copy. This makes it accessible for mixed households with both console generations, though solo play requires a Switch 2.
