Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 20, 2025, inaugurated the new terminal building of Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport in Guwahati—India’s first nature-themed airport terminal. Built at ₹4,000 crore, this state-of-the-art facility positions Northeast India as a strategic gateway to Southeast Asia while handling 13.1 million passengers annually.

India’s First Nature-Themed Airport

The terminal showcases Assam’s biodiversity and cultural heritage through its “Bamboo Orchids” design concept. Officials describe it as the country’s first nature-themed airport, featuring Kaziranga-inspired landscapes, bamboo architectural elements, and design motifs celebrating the region’s natural beauty. The terminal provides prominent space for local brands across retail, food and beverage outlets, and an Airport Village housing local restaurants.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted how his government’s 2017 amendment to the Indian Forest Act reclassified bamboo as “grass” instead of “tree,” enabling this architectural innovation using bamboo extensively throughout the terminal structure.

Advanced Passenger Experience

The facility features DigiYatra-enabled passenger processing, smart check-in systems, and expansive naturally lit interiors. Consolidated domestic security lanes include Automated Tray Retrieval Systems (ATRS), while full-body scanners provide fast, non-intrusive security screening. Fast Track Immigration (FTI-TTP) facilities expedite clearance for Indian nationals and OCI cardholders.

Self-service smart information kiosks offer flight status updates, interactive maps, Wi-Fi access, SOS support, food and beverage ordering, duty-free shopping, and passenger feedback—reducing dependency on airport staff while improving service delivery.

Strategic Regional Hub

Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani emphasized the terminal will serve as a catalyst for regional and industrial development, strengthening Guwahati’s role beyond tourism as an emerging economic gateway. The airport positions Guwahati as a critical passenger and cargo hub for all eight northeastern states—Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim.

PM Modi noted that while only three major bridges crossed the Brahmaputra in six decades after Independence, four new mega bridges including Bogibeel and Dhola-Sadiya have been completed in the last decade. Railway connectivity transformed with Vande Bharat Express reducing travel time between Guwahati and New Jalpaiguri, while cargo movement on the Brahmaputra increased by 140%.

Additional Developments

During his visit, PM Modi unveiled an 80-foot statue of Gopinath Bardoloi, Assam’s first Chief Minister and Bharat Ratna recipient, sculpted by eminent artist Ram Sutar. Plans include an elevated corridor on the airport road improving connectivity between the airport and Jalukbari while easing traffic congestion.

Future plans encompass integrated domestic and international cargo facilities, strengthening regional supply chains and economic growth. The terminal’s MRO infrastructure generates skilled employment opportunities across the aviation ecosystem.
