PlayStation 6 to Be Powered by AMD as Intel Loses Bid in 2022

The PlayStation 6, just like its predecessors, is one with an AMD chip, a formality that didn’t actually become fact until 2022. Still, not until the talks had been completed would decisive rejection by Intel to construct Sony’s next game box.

According to a recent report from Reuters, Intel and AMD were the last two contenders in the bidding process for the PlayStation 6 contract. The deal stalled over disagreements about how much money Intel would get on each chip Sony sold. This had caused trouble for Intel as it was still unable to agree on the price with Sony. AMD, meanwhile, won the contract through a procurement process that started with multiple competitors but worked things down to Intel as the only rival.

Intel and Sony have been in talks for more than a few months, with CEOs, engineers, and senior execs donning their best-honed strategic cap to perfect the details behind this new alliance. It was AMD who eventually won the contract, despite Intel making a substantial offer. In response to Reuters’ report, Intel argued the characterization of its loss was incorrect and declined comment on any potential or ongoing talks with Sony. AMD, meanwhile, declined to comment.

Whilst pricing was a big component of the disagreement there were also other factors. Part of this was due to directed towards compatibility, where the move from AMD for PlayStation 6 could have jeopardized backward compatibility. This was one of the most important discussions those two teams were having with tech and execs from both companies.

As the PlayStation 6 is still several years away from release, detailed information about the console remains scarce. However, earlier reports indicate that Sony plans to make it the most powerful next-generation console yet. Machine learning is expected to play a significant role in delivering what is anticipated to be the most significant generational leap in gaming technology.
