Sony Drops Hints About the Upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro: Everything We Know So Far

Sony has recently dropped hints about the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro (PS5 Pro) as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations, stirring excitement in the gaming community. With leaks and rumors circulating, here’s a comprehensive look at what we know so far about the PS5 Pro, from design teasers to performance upgrades and release dates.

Design Teased in Anniversary Post

Earlier this week, renowned leaker billbill-kun shared what is believed to be the first look at the PS5 Pro, showing a sneak peek at its potential design. Sony soon followed up with a slight tease of its own.

In a celebratory image shared as part of PlayStation’s 30th-anniversary blog post, Sony included a mockup that strongly resembles the leaked design. This has led fans to speculate that an official reveal is coming up, further supported by reports from The Verge’s Tom Warren.

Warren mentioned that developers have been informed that all games launching from September 16, 2024, must support the PS5 Pro, reinforcing the idea that the mid-generation console refresh is just around the corner.

November Release Date Likely

Insider Tom Henderson added weight to the rumor mill by suggesting that the PS5 Pro will launch in November 2024. This aligns with the timeline followed by the PlayStation 4 Pro, which also saw a September announcement and a November release.

The timeline seems likely based on information circulating from Gamescom 2024, where developers were reportedly discussing the new console openly. With September already here, an official announcement is expected soon, and excitement is building among PlayStation fans. Next week might be when the PS5 Pro is finally revealed, which would be right in line with previous console release cycles.

Performance Upgrades Over the PS5

One of the biggest draws of the PS5 Pro is its significant hardware and performance improvements over the base PS5 model. It is expected to deliver a 45% boost in rasterized rendering thanks to a larger GPU and faster memory.

This improvement will make the console far more efficient in processing traditional rendering tasks, leading to smoother gameplay and more detailed graphics.

Additionally, the PS5 Pro will feature an enhanced ray tracing architecture, providing 2-3x speed improvements over the base model, with some instances seeing performance boosts as high as 4x. This will result in superior lighting, shadow, and reflection effects, adding more realism to game environments.

Custom Machine Learning Architecture

The PlayStation 5 Pro will also feature a custom machine learning architecture, capable of supporting 300 TOPS at 8-bit, which is expected to enhance upscaling techniques. This will power the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an advanced upscaling method akin to NVIDIA DLSS or AMD FSR.

Unlike other techniques, Sony’s PSSR does not require per-game training and will provide more visually impressive results through its machine learning-enhanced version of Temporal Anti-Aliasing Upscaling (TAAU). This is expected to deliver improved image quality without increasing the burden on game developers.

Speculation on Pricing

While there is still no confirmed pricing for the PS5 Pro, fans are eagerly awaiting further details. Given the advanced performance and features that the console will offer, it is expected that the PS5 Pro will come with a premium price tag.

However, as Sony keeps tight-lipped on this front, speculation about the pricing continues, and an official announcement is likely to include these crucial details.

State of Play Rumors

Alongside the PS5 Pro rumors, there are also hints that Sony is planning a State of Play broadcast in the week of November 19-20, which could showcase new first-party games designed to take full advantage of the PS5 Pro’s capabilities.

This would give fans not only the chance to see the new console but also a glimpse at the upcoming titles that will push its hardware to the limits. With many looking forward to the improvements in ray tracing, machine learning, and upscaling, the potential State of Play broadcast could be a major highlight for the gaming world this year.
