Some of the most useful functions on a phone are real-time translation, Magic Eraser (which removes unpleasant people or things from your photos), and Wait for Me (which allows the Google Assistant to monitor when you’re on hold and return to the call when the representative is ready to speak with you).
Despite the numerous problems that have negatively damaged the Pixel 6 series’ user experience, Google appears to be optimistic about the device. Face unlock for the Pixel 6 Pro could be available as soon as June 6th, when the next Pixel Quarterly Feature Drop arrives.
Unlike the Face unlock feature found on the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL in 2019, the Pixel 6 Pro’s face recognition technology is unlikely to include 3D mapping. Face ID and the Pixel 4 series’ Face unlock are both secure thanks to the usage of 3D. That’s because 3D mapping will detect every hump and notch on your face, but a 2D facial recognition system can be fooled by a snapshot of your face being held up in front of the camera.
While Face unlock is likely to be enabled on the Pixel 6 Pro via a software update, the 3D mapping will be impossible to achieve without the necessary hardware. While the decision to leave Face to unlock off the Pixel 6 Pro is said to have been made at the last minute, there is no evidence that the phone was designed with the technology required for 3D mapping in the first place.
To be honest, I don’t believe Pixel 6 Pro owners will be too disappointed if they have to utilize 2D for Face unlock, albeit they won’t be able to use it to verify online transactions.
