People We Meet On Vacation Ending: When Opposites Finally Attract

After years of anticipation, People We Meet On Vacation finally landed on Netflix on January 9, 2026, bringing Emily Henry’s beloved novel to life. Starring Emily Bader as free-spirited travel blogger Poppy Wright and Tom Blyth as hometown English teacher Alex Nilsen, this friends-to-lovers tale had us asking one burning question: do they or don’t they?

Spoiler alert: They absolutely do. But the journey to that happily-ever-after is what makes this Netflix rom-com worth every swoon-worthy minute.

People We Meet On Vacation Film Overview

The Setup: A Decade of Denial

Poppy and Alex couldn’t be more different. She’s a globetrotting travel writer who thrives on adventure and spontaneity. He’s a small-town educator who finds comfort in routine and stability. Yet over countless summer vacations together, they’ve become each other’s perfect complement—she brings the excitement, he brings the grounding.

The problem? Neither wants to admit that maybe, just maybe, their connection runs deeper than friendship. Sound familiar? This classic rom-com setup keeps viewers invested because we all know someone like Poppy or Alex—or we’ve been them ourselves.

The Ending: Love Conquers Geography

After Alex breaks up with longtime girlfriend Sarah and confesses that Poppy played a role in his relationship’s demise, the tension finally explodes at his brother David’s wedding. The two admit their feelings but immediately clash over their incompatible lifestyles—her nomadic existence versus his desire for roots and family.

Here’s where it gets good. A chance encounter with Sarah helps Poppy realize that her wanderlust was never about avoiding commitment—it was about avoiding loneliness. Her constant travel masked a deeper fear: that she’d always be alone. This epiphany sends her running (literally) to Alex with a declaration that their love matters more than their differences.

The film closes with the couple sharing a New York apartment, each pursuing their passions while building a life together. Poppy continues writing about her adventures, while Alex teaches and finally feels complete. The message? Love doesn’t require you to give up who you are—it just asks you to make room for someone else.

Why This Ending Works

Unlike typical rom-coms where one character sacrifices everything, People We Meet On Vacation finds a middle ground. Poppy doesn’t abandon her career, and Alex doesn’t compromise his values. They negotiate, adapt, and grow together—which, let’s be honest, is what real relationships require.

The Netflix adaptation stays faithful to Emily Henry’s vision while adding cinematic charm that book fans and newcomers alike will appreciate. It’s the kind of feel-good ending we all need right now.
