Patriot Box Office Disaster: When Two Malayalam Legends Couldn’t Save a Sinking Ship

The Malayalam film industry just witnessed one of its most disappointing box office outings of 2026. Patriot, the much-hyped spy thriller featuring two of Kerala cinema’s biggest icons — Mammootty and Mohanlal — is limping toward the exit door with a projected total of just Rs. 30 crore in Kerala.

Fans had sky-high expectations. The reality? A box office disaster.

Patriot Kerala Box Office: Week-by-Week Breakdown

In Week 2, Patriot managed to collect only Rs. 4.50 crore in Kerala, with its second Thursday dropping to a mere Rs. 10 lakh — an 80% fall from the previous day. That’s not a slow fade; that’s a freefall.

Combined with its Week 1 collection of Rs. 24.25 crore, the film’s 14-day cumulative stands at approximately Rs. 28.75 crore.

The opening day of Rs. 8.50 crore showed some promise — but the rapid crash afterward told the real story. Word-of-mouth clearly didn’t work in the film’s favour.

Why Does This Hurt More?

When you put together two of Malayalam cinema’s greatest stars — Mammootty with his decades-long legacy and Mohanlal with his cult Drishyam fanbase — the expectations are never modest. A Rs. 30 crore finish in Kerala for such a big-budget spy thriller is, by any measure, a disaster.

What’s Next for Mohanlal?

All eyes are now on Drishyam 3, which is already generating massive pre-sales buzz — recording Rs. 3 crore in Kerala advance bookings alone. If the film earns positive word-of-mouth, industry observers believe its box office potential could be sky-high.

Mohanlal’s faithful won’t have to wait long for redemption.
