A Small Relief That Means a Lot
For workers like Santosh Kumar, who previously rested under trees during peak summer, the pods are a welcome change. The government also plans to expand the initiative across the city based on feedback, and is pushing platforms like Swiggy, Zomato, Uber, Ola and Rapido to register workers on the eShram portal by June 21.
Following Chennai and Coimbatore’s Lead
Chennai launched India’s first AC lounges for gig workers in Anna Nagar and KK Nagar last year, followed by Coimbatore’s RS Puram and Gandhipuram facilities. Delhi is reportedly planning similar pods too, while Amazon runs its own mobile rest vans under Project Ashray.
