Paris Saint-Germain have defended their Ligue 1 title, after their draw against Strasbourg confirmed their win mathematically. Their closest challengers this season were Lens, who are four points behind the Parisians with one matchday to go.
Their season started in remarkable fashion, with Christophe Galtier laying down ambitions for the team to go unbeaten domestically. However, their form after the World Cup was quite disappointing, and they seemed close to slipping up in their title charge.
Paris Saint-Germain win Ligue 1 title for the 11th time
PSG have now overtaken Saint Etienne for the most Ligue 1 titles with eleven to their name in comparison to their ten titles between 1957 and 1981. Nine of their titles have come under Qatari ownership, since their takeover in 2012.
Kylian Mbappe finishes as the top scorer in the league, with 28 goals to his name. Messi, on the other hand, finishes as the second-highest goalscorer with 16 goals to his name alongside 16 assists to end his spell at the club.
Their hopes of winning the Coupe de France came to a screeching halt when they were eliminated by Marseille early in the tournament. Toulouse eventually went on to win the trophy, and qualify for the Europa League in the process.
Questions over the club’s mentality also emerged after they were eliminated in the Round of 16 by Bayern Munich. However, they have avoided a trophyless season by winning the league.
This summer will present a new challenge for the Paris Saint-Germain management, with decisions to be made over the futures of Neymar as well as Galtier.
