Some reunions are supposed to feel like relief. In Paradise Lost, the reunion feels like a knock on the door from a stranger. Director Yeon Sang Ho has released new stills of Kim Hyun Joo, and the emotion in them is hard to look away from.

The Story: Grief Meets Technology

Nine years ago, So Young’s son vanished. To cope, she began talking with a younger, childlike version of him through an AI program. Then the real Sun Woo comes home alive. Instead of the sweet boy she remembers, she meets someone entirely different, and living together becomes deeply uncomfortable. The film asks a haunting question: can a memory, even a digital one, replace the real person?

Why Kim Hyun Joo?

This is her fourth project with the director, following Hellbound, Jung_E and The Bequeathed. Yeon Sang Ho says she was his only choice, since the role is so delicate that overacting feels artificial while underacting hides the emotion. Kim Hyun Joo describes So Young’s first feeling as unfamiliarity, as if a strange man had appeared before her. The director adds that she made the character more approachable than he had expected.

Two Stills, Two Emotions

The first still shows So Young in a doorway, gazing inside with worry and confusion. The second shows her in a dark car, looking determined while barely holding herself together. Together they capture a mother caught between hope and dread.
