Real Madrid’s victory last week marked the 40th time they have won the first leg of a European knockout tie away from home. They have successfully progressed in 37 of the previous 39 instances, with the only exceptions coming against Odense Boldklub (1994-95 UEFA Cup) and Ajax (2018-19 Champions League).
