NASA’s latest Mars rover is powered by a 1998 iMac Processor

0

Remember the iMac computers produced in the late 1990s? NASA’s brand-new Perseverance rover, the most advanced machine that’s ever landed on Mars, uses the same processor that powered those 1990 iMacs. When it comes to rovers, “state of the art” is a subjective term.

Perseverance is running on none other than a PowerPC 750 that’s most famous for powering the original “Bondi blue” iMac from 1998; it consists of a single-core, 233MHz processor with just 6 million transistors. NASA’s Curiosity rover uses the same type of processor. Even affordable smartphones now have more than 1000 times the transistors in these rovers.

Why is such old technology being used in a cutting-edge space exploration mission?

Even with the difficulty of buying computer parts these days, surely somewhere in the $2.7 billion costs of Perseverance, NASA could have found the $500 budget for something like Intel’s Core i9-10900K CPU (with 10 cores and a max clock speed of 5.3GHz). But as a report by New Scientist explains, such an advanced chip is actually not good for the unique operating conditions of Mars.

Earth’s atmosphere provides protection from harmful radiation and charged particles much more than Mars’ atmosphere. A bad burst of radiation can destroy the sensitive electronics of a modern processor — and there is a possibility of more going wrong with the increased complexity of the chip.

Plus, at 138 million miles away, NASA cannot just swap out the processor if things go sideways. Because of those conditions, two computing modules are present in Perseverance: one is a backup just in case something goes wrong. (A third copy of the module is also on board for image analysis.)

The PowerPC 750 chip in Perseverance is not exactly like the one in the old iMacs to increase durability. It’s technically a RAD750 chip, a special variant that’s hardened against radiation, costing upwards of $200,000. The chip is popular for spacecraft, too: in addition to Perseverance and Curiosity, it also powers the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, the Kepler telescope, the Fermi Space Telescope, and the Deep Impact comet-hunting spacecraft, among others.

Compared to a modern smartphone or gaming PC, the processor may be weak. NASA’s spec sheet for Perseverance notes that it’s far more powerful than earlier rovers like Opportunity or Spirit. According to The Verge, “its 200MHz clock speed is 10 times faster than those older rovers, and with 2GB of flash memory, it offers eight times the storage. (Rounding things out, Perseverance also has 256MB of RAM in case you were looking to build your own rover.)”

Perseverance features some new computer technology: Linux is debuting on Mars, it powers the Ingenuity helicopter, and will attempt to fly autonomously on Mars as part of Perseverance’s mission.

World Rugby has made the difficult decision to recommend the postponement of Rugby World Cup 2021, scheduled to be hosted in New Zealand between 18 September-16 October, until next year

The recommendation will be considered by the Rugby World Cup Board and World Rugby Executive Committee on 8 and 9 March respectively

CAPE TOWN, South Africa, March 3, 2021/ — World Rugby has made the difficult decision to recommend the postponement of Rugby World Cup 2021, scheduled to be hosted in New Zealand between 18 September-16 October, until next year. The recommendation will be considered by the Rugby World Cup Board and World Rugby Executive Committee on 8 and 9 March respectively.

While appreciating the recommendation is extremely disappointing for teams and fans, it has their interests at heart, and gives the tournament the best opportunity to be all it can be for them, all New Zealanders and the global rugby family.

The recommendation is based on the evolution of the uncertain and challenging global COVID-19 landscape. It has become clear in recent discussions with key partners including New Zealand Rugby, the New Zealand Government and participating unions, that, given the scale of the event and the COVID-19-related uncertainties, it is just not possible to deliver the environment for all teams to be the best that they can be on the sport’s greatest stage.

The challenges include uncertainty and the ability for teams to prepare adequately for a Rugby World Cup tournament both before and on arrival in New Zealand, and challenging global travel restrictions.

World Rugby can assure teams, New Zealanders and the global rugby family that the recommendation to postpone the tournament will help to ensure that Rugby World Cup 2021 will be all it can be next year for players, fans and the rugby family – one of the great Rugby World Cups.

Further updates will be issued following the Rugby World Cup Board and World Rugby Executive Committee meetings next week.

Apex Legends hits a record of 198,235 concurrent users

0

Apex Legends Season 8 has gained a boost in this title’s player population. In the last month, it enjoyed nearly 70,000 more concurrent players on Steam than in January. On November 5, 2020, the game was released on Valve’s storefront, and since that time, the game has been a pretty popular and enduring one.

By November 10 in the last year, the game had claimed the privilege of being the fourth highest concurrent player count on Steam – a superb achievement for a game that had been on the storefront only for five days.

As February now has closed, according to SteamDB, the title has gained a record-breaking player count of 198,235. Mainly on Saturday, the peak was seen, and that was the highest ever concurrent user peak as per the report.

This means that the popular titles, which always stay at the top of the Steam player charts like Rainbow Six Siege, GTA V, and so on – are less popular than the battle royal of Respawn this weekend. It is said that the recent Second Anniversary Collection event is clearly attracting many players to the game. Though, Apex Legends still needs to go a long way to achieve the heights of PUBG’s peak of 3,236,027 concurrent players.

Apex Legends Season 8 became one of the most popular seasons of the game whether due to some changes in Ranked meta, or the return of King’s Canyon map, or including new legend Fuse.

Steam has more monthly active users than the PlayStation and Xbox has, and Steam did overtake its own record at the beginning of the year when it achieved 25,416,720 online concurrent users.

Intel has been ordered to pay $ 2.18 billion for patent infringement

0

The Blue team has recently been penalized at the federal court on Thursday, which has ordered Intel to pay $ 2.18 billion for infringing two patents related to chip manufacturing technology owned by VLSI Technology.

As per Bloomberg, the first patent was originally owned by the Freescale Semiconductor and the second by SigmaTel. Having acquired SigmaTel, Freescale Semiconductor was later acquired by Lan NXP Semiconductors. So, both of these controversial patents were transferred from NXP to VLSI in 2019.

The VLSI lawyers have stated these patents covers “inventions that improve processor power and speed, which are important competitive issues,” whereas the law and litigation news site Law360 and several other media outlets have reported patents on “systems and methods for managing electronic device clock speeds,” “minimum operating voltage-related technologies in memory,” and “voltage-based memory size scaling.”

Overall, it is understandable that both of the technology patents infringed by Intel are used for their own benefit to reduce power consumption as well as increase efficiency of their chips. Although Intel did claim that one of the two patent infringements was invalid, but it was rejected, and its lawyers have told the media they intend to appeal.

Jio, Airtel to gain more market share at the cost of Vi: Reports

0

In the recently concluded Telecom Spectrum Auction 2021, Reliance Jio turned out to be the most aggressive bidder as it was reported earlier. Jio is likely to have closed the gap with Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea on overall airwave holdings, analysts said. Additionally, it is expected that the auction could also lead to Jio and Airtel gaining more market share at the cost of Vi.

Goldman Sachs expects “Jio to have largely closed its gap with Bharti and Vi on the total spectrum,” though, notably, data carried on the Jio’s 4G network is almost 2 times that on Airtel’s, and accordingly, the latter’s spectrum holding remains “materially higher vs. Jio”.

The analysts expect both Jio and Airtel, with their bolstered countrywide spectrum footprints, to further grow market share, and see the financially struggling Vi, which was a marginal player in the latest spectrum sale, likely getting weaker.

Vi acquired spectrum in 5 circles after spending a modest amount of Rs 1,993.40 crore. Its future competitiveness could have taken a hit seeing that it has not renewed a sizable chunk of its expiring 1800 Mhz spectrum. Unless it raises funds quickly to ramp up its 4G operations, it could be disastrous for the telco.

Jio’s spending at the auction totaled Rs 57,123 crore and Airtel spent Rs 18,699 crore, however, a report by Economic Times says this would only have a marginal impact on their balance sheets, “by likely raising their respective leverage levels (read: net debt to Ebitda) to roughly around 2.4x and 3.6x from 0.7x and 3x now.”

Analysts believed it was a “smart move” by Airtel to plug gaps in its sub-GHz spectrum holdings by opting to bid for 800 Mhz airwaves in key markets – Madhya Pradesh, UP-West, and Haryana — where it did not have 900 Mhz spectrum, “that would tone up its 4G coverage and also enable limited-scale 5G rollouts in key markets”.

However, Airtel’s decision to not renew the 1800 Mhz spectrum in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Haryana was defended by the analysts saying that it was “purely need-based” as it has adequate back-up airwaves in other bands in these circles.

Ankit Jain, assistant vice president, ICRA, said Jio and Airtel’s consolidation of sub-GHz spectrum bands “will be crucial for 5G technology deployments and improvement in indoor coverage.” He added that the appetite for the 2300 Mhz band, in turn, stemmed from the rising mobile broadband usage and thus the need for improving network capacity.

Rajiv Sharma, a telecom expert, said that “Jio’s aggressive bidding signals its efforts to bulk up on sub-GHz, mid-band and capacity spectrum to accommodate a potential surge in its 4G customer base after it launches the much-awaited budget smartphone with Google.”

Recently, Jio Platforms raised more than Rs 1.52 lakh-crore by selling stakes to the likes of American giants such as Google, Facebook, Qualcomm, and Intel amongst others.

At the auction, Jio was the only telco facing a must-buy situation, its airwaves in the 800 Mhz band that it owns and also uses as part of a sharing pact with Reliance Communications (RCom) are expiring in 18 circles in July.

Colorful launches RTX 3060 and RTX 3060 Ti iCafe GPUs for internet cafes

0

The Chinese GPU giant has launched two new GPUs specially designed for internet cafes in China. In the middle of a global GPU shortage, Colorful did end up producing the iCafe editions of the RTX 3060 and RTX 3060 Ti GPUs.

Although both of them look very identical to each other, these are two different GPUs made for a reason as in China internet cafes are still very popular. So, to make cost-effective iCafe edition GPUs makes sense but these cafes have already become the place of mining and supplying new GPUs will indeed be profitable.

These GPUs come with a new dual-fan cooler and both GA104 and GA106 pin-compatible. As Videocardz reports, these cards will not be available in some fancy packaging, as they will be sold in bulk directly to Internet Cafes.

Coming to specs, the GPUs are kept at reference clocks, default TDP, and offer standard display output configuration. These RTX 3060 iCafe models are more like redesigned NVIDIA reference GPUs but although they are being touted to be made for cafes but could end up in the hands of miners, you never know.

Nvidia’s Resizable BAR enabled for RTX 3060

Nvidia’s Resizable BAR is the technology that gives a tough competition to AMD’s Smart Access Memory. Currently, the green team has made its technology-enabled for the latest GeForce RTX 3060 and RTX 30 series powered laptops.

Resizable BAR improves performance ‘from a few percent, up to 10%’ of the games. If we compare the benchmark results at 1080p and other high resolutions, we can conclude that currently AMD’s Smart Access Memory is the ultimate winner. It outperforms Nvidia’s Resizable BAR by a huge margin. NVIDIA claims that it 0will tweak Resizable BAR in future updates, but AMD is the winner with SAM currently.

According to fresh sources, the company has enabled the functionality of Resizable Bar for the following eight games:

  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
  • Battlefield V
  • Borderlands 3
  • Forza Horizon 4
  • Gears 5
  • Metro Exodus
  • Red Dead Redemption 2
  • Watch Dogs: Legion

NVIDIA stated that support for additional games would arrive before the end of the month. However, NVIDIA also noted that Resizable BAR reduces performance in some games.

For the desktop gamers, we also have good news. According to sources, NVIDIA will distribute VBIOS updates for its RTX 30 series Founders Edition cards in ‘late March.’ The company will issue a new Game Ready Driver too, but it will be up to NVIDIA board partners to release VBIOS updates for their custom cards.

So we can expect to see Resizable BAR support reach the rest of the RTX 30 series desktop product stack before the end of March.
