Oppo next-generation under display camera prototype video out

Oppo has unveiled its next-generation under-display camera, and it looks highly promising. While its 2019 effort was also impressive, Oppo has come a long way in the last year and a half. Now we get to see a hands-on video of a prototype.

Blogger, who experienced the engineering prototype of OPPO’s next-generation under-screen camera, said, “this is what the under-screen camera of a mobile phone should look like! I have tried that no matter from which angle, different light refraction, and different screen display colors, the camera under the OPPO next-generation screen hides very, very well, and it is very difficult to find the presence of a camera under the screen. Even if you see a little shadow from a special angle, it is very small and light in color, and the same is true under the screen. Also, I like the reference prototype of this display technology, this size is just right for me!“

OPPO has been working on this probable punch-hole replacement since 2018 and had even prepared a standard for the technology for submission to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in 2020. The OEM has announced that it will call its take on the feature its under-screen camera (USC, whereas Xiaomi might intend to call its version “camera-under-panel” CUP).

OPPO’s main new USC-related breakthrough makes the small sub-section of active display in question “1-to-1” with the rest of the panel, even though the actual pixels in question are different sizes. This development apparently keeps detail in content such as text constant across the display, and can also boost a USC panel’s quality and reliability over time.

Many smartphone users want a larger display and don’t want to deal with a punch-hole camera or a notch. The only way to avoid these designs is to utilize an under-screen camera. Prior attempts at a high-quality under-screen camera have been a mixed bag, and none so far have adequately solved the issues mentioned above. Hopefully, Oppo’s new technology can live up to its hype and deliver a no-compromise under-display camera experience.
