Global technology company OPPO has reiterated its pledge to achieve carbon neutrality across its operations by 2050. The announcement, made on Earth Day 2026, highlights the company’s ongoing efforts in sustainable practices, product development, and community engagement. OPPO, which serves over 760 million users in more than 90 countries and regions, emphasized its responsibility in shaping a more environmentally conscious future.

OPPO Upgraded Packaging Materials Drive Green Transition

OPPO has implemented a “3R+1D” principle—Reduction, Recyclability, Reusability, and Degradability—in its product packaging. This strategy aims to mitigate the environmental impact of consumer goods packaging.

A key initiative involves digitizing product guidance information, moving away from paper-based manuals. In 2025, this measure reportedly saved approximately 110 million A4 sheets of paper, equivalent to conserving about 13,000 mature trees and reducing around 3,500 tons of carbon emissions. Furthermore, OPPO is incorporating natural biomass materials, such as tea residue, into packaging designs, replacing 10-30% of petroleum-based plastics with these alternatives. This approach seeks to reduce plastic consumption and utilize biomass waste.

Addressing the Challenge of Electronic Waste

The increasing volume of global electronic waste presents a significant environmental challenge, with United Nations data showing 62 million tons generated in 2022 and a projection to surpass 82 million tons by 2030. OPPO is tackling this through improved product durability and an enhanced recycling system.

The company encourages users to return devices for reuse, dismantling, or safe disposal. In 2025, OPPO recycled 1,187 tons of used electronic devices across China and Europe. This figure is noted alongside the sale of approximately 35,300 tons of new products during the same period.

Engaging Communities in Green Initiatives

Beyond its internal operational adjustments, OPPO is collaborating with communities globally to foster public participation in environmental efforts.

In India, OPPO partnered with the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to launch the Generation Green Initiative. This program engaged 5,000 interns and over one million young people nationwide, who collectively volunteered 469,500 hours to process 10,339 kilograms of electronic waste. The initiative aimed to promote effective e-waste management and raise environmental awareness among the youth.

In Africa, OPPO has partnered with the Peaceland Foundation and Impact Steps to support rhino conservation in Kenya. The company donated OPPO Find X9 series smartphones to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Researchers utilize the smartphones’ advanced telephoto capabilities to photograph rhino eye patterns from a distance, streamlining data collection for tracking movements, migrations, and demographic changes of these endangered animals. OPPO stated its continued commitment to advancing sustainability initiatives worldwide, collaborating with users, partners, and various sectors of society to build a more sustainable future.
