Ole Gunnar Solskjær Appointed as Besiktas Head Coach Until 2026

In a major managerial move, former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær has officially signed on as the new head coach of Turkish football club Besiktas.

This marks the Norwegian’s first managerial position since his departure from Old Trafford in 2021. His contract with the Super Lig side is set to last until the end of the 2025-26 season, with an option for a one-year extension.

A New Chapter for Solskjær in Istanbul

After a brief period away from the managerial spotlight, Ole Gunnar Solskjær is set to take charge of Besiktas. The club, based in Istanbul, has been without a permanent coach since Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s departure last month. Solskjær’s arrival in Istanbul on Friday signifies the beginning of a fresh challenge, with the club looking for a steady hand to guide them back to their dominant ways.

Besiktas, one of Turkey’s most successful football clubs, has not been performing to its usual high standards, currently languishing in sixth place in the Super Lig. Solskjær’s task will be to get the club back on track and restore its reputation as a powerhouse in Turkish football. His experience, particularly from his tenure with Manchester United, will be crucial as he navigates this new challenge.

Solskjær’s Contract and Coaching Staff

The Norwegian manager has inked a deal that will keep him at Besiktas until 2026. According to an official statement from the club’s website, “A contract has been signed with Ole Gunnar Solskjær for the position of technical director of our professional football team until the end of the 2025-26 season with a one-year option for the 2026-27 season. We welcome Ole Gunnar Solskjær, who we believe will provide important services to our club, to the Besiktas family and wish him outstanding success.”

Solskjær will not be working alone. He has brought along his trusted assistant coach Erling Moe and goalkeeping coach Richard John Hartis. This trio will look to implement their tactical vision and bring stability to the club.

Previous Managerial Experience

Solskjær’s managerial career has seen him take charge of a variety of clubs, with mixed results. His most notable success came during his two separate stints at Molde, where he won multiple Norwegian league titles. He also had a brief, less successful spell as Cardiff City’s manager in 2014. However, it was at Manchester United where Solskjær made his mark, taking over in 2018 and guiding the team through a difficult transition. Although he eventually left United in 2021, his tenure at the club was seen as one of rebuilding and instilling a positive culture.

Solskjær’s Challenge at Besiktas

Besiktas, a 21-time Turkish league champion, has had a rocky period of late. The club’s recent inconsistency has seen them fall to sixth place in the Super Lig, far below the heights they once enjoyed. Solskjær will face a significant challenge as he attempts to restore the club’s competitive edge.

In the Super Lig, Solskjær will encounter some familiar faces, including his former rival José Mourinho, who currently manages Fenerbahce. Mourinho’s side is sitting in second place, just behind the leaders Galatasaray, setting up what promises to be an exciting managerial rivalry in Turkey. Solskjær’s ability to navigate these high-stakes encounters will be critical to his success.

What’s Next for Solskjær and Besiktas?

Solskjær’s first official match in charge of Besiktas will likely be next week’s Europa League clash against Athletic Bilbao, although he will be watching the team’s Saturday match against Samsunspor from the stands. Interim head coach Serdar Topraktepe has been in charge of the team, but Solskjær is expected to take the reins fully in the coming days.

Besiktas will be hoping that Solskjær’s experience and leadership can help guide them back to the top of Turkish football, starting with a strong performance in their European campaign. The next few months will be crucial for both the club and the Norwegian manager as they look to build a successful future together.
